Political work
Our political unit works to build political support for Greenpeace's campaigns and to translate campaign objectives into policy changes by government.
We work with people across the political and policy arena - from cabinet ministers to civil servants, and often in partnership with other policy experts - to pressure those within government to take the bold steps needed to protect the planet. While we work mostly in Westminster, we welcome political opportunities in the devolved regions, where there is sometimes greater political determination to address the complex environmental problems we face. For example, Greenpeace has worked with the Mayor of London to promote zero carbon developments in the Thames Gateway.
Because of the international nature of our campaigns, we also work in Europe alongside our EU office when there is an opportunity to influence or demand specific European legislation in support of our objectives.
The political unit helps campaigners identify the best political targets and opportunities. We ensure politicians are kept up to speed with our campaigns as they develop and we disseminate quality materials produced by our highly experienced campaigners and by the Policy and Solutions Unit. The Political Unit also delivers events for MPs in Westminster and at the Party Conferences to launch new reports and to ensure our campaign demands are clearly heard by decision-makers.
Our work is substantially enhanced by the work of our active supporters and members of the public who lobby their elected representatives.
