Wave power

One way of avoiding risky technologies or environmentally damaging practices is to find replacements or alternatives to what is being provided.

Offshore wind turbines Wind energy
So Greenpeace campaigns for clean, renewable energy (wind, wave and solar power) as opposed to nuclear power - which creates nuclear waste and possible accidents. Our global warming campaign highlights the need for clean power sources over coal and oil, which lead to climate change. For over 10 years Greenpeace has campaigned for the use of 'Greenfreeze' refrigeration to replace damaging ozone depleting and climate changing gases.

We campaign for recycling and 'cool waste management', called mechanical biological treatment of waste, which avoids the use of waste incineration. More on Zero Waste.

Organic farming fields Organic farming fields
We campaign for organic agriculture which retains agricultural biodiversity and avoids the use of synthetic pesticides and fertilisers, and the release of GM crops.

We campaign for the avoidance of PVC, which is very polluting in production and disposal as waste, through the use of suitable alternatives in building and construction. We also promote a PVC-free Visa card.

Finally, we also accept that not all alternatives are simply new bits of technology or direct replacements. We have campaigned for the use of sustainably harvested timber using widely-endorsed guidelines called the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification.
