At last, a victory for sustainable fishing

Yesterday morning in chilly Brussels I joined small scale fishermen and Greenpeace campaigners who had travelled from all over Europe to demonstrate together outside the European Council Building. We were there to remind ministers to put the health of our oceans first, in the reform process of the European laws that govern our seas.<--break->

Today we received the great news that after only 12 days of our intensive campaign, Waitrose has announced it has put its partnership with Arctic oil drillers Shell on ice.

The only oil spill Waitrose wants to be associated with

So far over 15,000 of us have told Waitrose to drop their partnership with Shell - and we’re definitely having an impact. Waitrose responded on Sunday with this - saying their partnership with Shell is ‘tiny’ with only two stores at petrol stations. Well our sources say that Shell is pushing for many more.

Waitrose - aren’t they meant to be one of the more ethical supermarkets, a green leader? Well in many ways they are – Greenpeace’s oceans team has worked closely with Waitrose in the past to help them source their fish more sustainably and we know many of those who shop at Waitrose, do so to make an ethical choice.
