Action stations at climate camp
Posted by jamie on 19 August 2007.
Right now, a group of two hundred or so climate campers are marching across a field on their way to Heathrow in an attempt to blockade the BAA offices. Needless to say, huge numbers of police - some in riot gear - are in their way.
Other groups from the camp may already be there, as there was no one single plan of action formulated before this morning. Rather, groups came up with individual plans with a common goal - demonstrating against airport and aviation expansion which threatens to undermine attempts to reduce climate change emissions. There was even an action especially for kids (and their parents) that was slighty less hardcore than others that were cooked up.
Breaking out from the camp just after 2pm, the orderly march was quickly disrupted by a small group of police and there were some clashes - an injured man was lead back towards the camp by his mates. Riot squads appeared alongside the march and stopped protesters leaving the other side of the field, and sirens filled the air as seven or eight police vans raced to join them.
Unfortunately, I neglected to bring my binoculars so after that it was difficult to make out what was happening, but the march seemed to peel off along another edge of the field, looking for another way out. I'm going to see if I can find out more details, but in the meantime you can see the pitures I've put on Moblog and check Indymedia's news ticker for regular updates.
