We assembled at about 8am this morning near to Cairn Energy's offices in Edinburgh. It was a strange gaggle of people in suits and an army of polar bears. Such a gathering was going to attract attention so we couldn't hang about - we crossed Festival Square which was starting to get busy with people heading for work and straight through the doors of Cairn's office building.

It was a slow climb up the stairs to the fourth and fifth floors where Cairn is based - the polars bears needed a helping hand and I was carrying one of the steel tubes which is part of our locking on kit, trying to take pictures at the same time.

Video:

There were already a large number of polar bears massing outside Cairn's reception on the fourth floor, and the wily security guard was alreadyblocking the doors. The plan had been to get inside to search for the oil spill response plan but when it became clear we couldn't get in, polar bears and suits alike sat down, got out the handcuffs and locked in for the duration.

We've been in the lobby for over three hours, and i'm writing this one-handed - my other is cuffed. We've called through the glass reception door to ask for the plans and for a meeting with Sir Bill, but the response was strangely negative. Is this because they know the plan isn't worth the paper it's written on?

Sitting still for three hours is a bit dull, it has to be said, although there has been some light relief. A delivery man was startled when the lift doors opened on a room full of prostrate polar bears - he couldn't complete his delivery, not because we were in the way (well, that didn't help) but because the security guard thought it was a ruse to get him to open the locked door. And the lobby is well supplied with toilets so we haven't had to use the wee bottles. Yet.

The team heading for the fifth floor have got in but, thanks to the rubbish phone signal in here, you probably know more about what they've been up to than I do. We're going to stay here until Cairn releases the details of its emergency plan, or until we're cut out.

The polar bears occupying Cairn's HQ are writing out your messages for Cairn on Post It notes and posting them around the building. Help keep the bears occupied - send your message to Cairn (via a polar bear), by commenting on this post, Tweeting with the hashtag #Cairn or commenting on our Facebook or Google Plus posts.

just publish the plan & let the world see what it is!

As a concerned citizen, I feel I have the right to some reassurance that you have sufficient plans in place to manage a spill in the arctic waters. Please reassure me!

Stop destroying the world for greed

Cairn,

If you've got nothing to hide, show us your emergency plans. If you don't, we can only assume you're up to something BAD.

Cairn! Publish your spill response plan if you have nothing to hide!

What's wrong? Ain't got a realistic spill response plan?

Come on Cairns - is there even a plan A for an Arctic oil spill, let alone a plan B?

By not publically publishing the plan, you're basically admitting the one you have isn't worth the paper it's printed on.

No amount of oil is worth the destruction of an entire ecosystem. Please, for once, stop chasing money and do what's right.

Cairn - the longer you dither about the more we think you are hiding your inability to clean up your mess. This all equals = GET OUT THE ARTIC!

Cairn,

Why the mystery? Please show us that you are resonsible and ethical.

Thanks.

Hello Cairn

re BEAR necessities : publish your spill plan, do it now. the world is waiting. You really don't want to be like BP do you?

The world is watching Cairn !

So, like, what's the plan? Oil booms? Dispersants? Bioagents? Hiring the Innuit to keep them from complaining?

What's the plan?

BTW, the plan for the Gulf of Mexico called for some effort to protect the walruses there. Do you have plans to protect the Pink Flamingoes in the Artic?

Come clean Cairn - show us the plan.

Stop destroying our beautiful world. Just realize how concerned millions of people are ! Even people in Holland !

Please, Cairn, take the opportunity to be the Big Man and show your plans. The bears (and the suits) are honest folk you can trust. I do,

I live in South Africa. Arctic drilling has serious impacts on us all. First of all, it increases the threat of climate change. Secondly, it threatens to destroy a pristine wilderness with all the rich and unusual  species that live there. The Arctic is a property of everyone on earth; it is time you showed stewardness for the environment, instead of being driven by the pursuit of property above all else.

C'mon Cairn - show us you're not bluffing...

No Plan - No Oil!   Keep the Bears white!

Cairn's response? Nothing.

Ah! The old white on white gambit. Oftimes favoured by politicians, police and paper barons. Sometimes even conflated with a “never put anything in writing” denial strategy, by grand masters of the game. Though I venture to suggest that this time, they Cairn find a way oot o’ this one.

No Plan - No Oil!  Keep the Bears White!

Go on! Share a plan with the bears.. they'd love to see it and so would we!

How can you go ahead with this proposed drilling without having a detailed back-up plan in case of leakage?

Come on Cairn, show us the Monet

CAIRN: STAY OUT of the arctic!

Is it even possible to clear up oil spills in such waters?

Or are you hoping for the best, that you don't need to find out?

Let's all be sensible, cut back on our oil demands and make these explorations redundant.

Publish ultimately your spill response plan!!

#Cairn

Out with oil.  In with bears.

Dear Cairn.  Remember Brent Spar, Greenpeace do not go away!

My guess at Cairn's response plan: Sir Bill looks rueful, resigns, but keeps the millions he made abusing the Arctic.

Am I wrong? OK then Cairn, tell us the real plan!

Guys, you would play like this with your home? Well don't do it in Arctic, either.

stay out of the arctic!

Take responsibility for your actions and publish a credible emergency plan, or get out of the Arctic...  Fact is you should not be there in the first place... Short-term corporate greed will kill our planet...

We all live in this world so why not show us that you are taking care of our future.

Your continued silence on the subject of your plan for dealing with an accidental spillage in the Arctic speaks volumes. You do not have a plan, do you? Before you begin to drill, can we just remind you that you do not own the Arctic. It belongs to every living thing. You do not have the moral right to rape the planet for your own pleasure.

Better have a plan B than a plan BP

Humans - the only unnatural creatures on the planet - please do not ruin the habitat of polar bears who live in harmony with their environment.

Accidents happen. Please get out of the Arctic before you cause one.

BACK OFF FROM THE ARCTIC, CAIRN!

Cairn, please show the world that you have abided by the law, and have a responsable plan for delaing with an oil spill. Refusing to do so is only causing mistrust to spread.

It is our world too, so why not show us that you are looking after it.

What will your grandchildren think of you?

Maybe Cairn is on it's the way to creating the worlds second largest oil spill ever! Go on, try beating BP when it comes to creating messes. In peoples minds, and in the enviroment.

We are morally and spiritually obligated to be stewards of this planet and that includes the Polar Bear.......it's time to honor it Mr. Cairn!

For goodness sake Cairn get your act together and do the right thing

We have children, grand children and great grandchildren. Think of them and publich!

Cairn...........Be clean and come clean about any plan !!

The earth has given enough already.  Get wise and put your money into renewables, instead of this mindless quest to go deeper and deeper to get to the 'holy grail'.  Your company is short sighted and driven by one thing - greed.  Give the world a break.

do you have children? don't you want them to have a planet to live on when you have left it?

Cairn please stay out of our living room. We need it more than you.
