As I write, major oil companies like Shell, ExxonMobil and Chevron are planning their moves into the Arctic to exploit its vast mineral resources. The five Arctic states are beginning the process of carving up the high north. Meanwhile, the ice keeps melting – we’ve now lost 75 per cent of Arctic sea ice in just 30 years. The global battle to protect the Arctic - from oil exploration, from industrialisation and from climate change – needs to be ambitious, bold and successful. So we’re asking you: what do you think we should we be doing to save the Arctic?

Last year, you helped to make sure that Cairn’s oil spill response plan was published – and exposed as deeply flawed. You challenged VW’s stance on climate change laws, dividing the car industry around this critical issue. You pushed to get the Arctic onto the UK’s political agenda by asking David Cameron what his plans were to protect the Arctic.

All of this has brought us a step closer to saving the Arctic. But as the high north grows more vulnerable to industrialisation, as the ice melts, as the oil companies move in and the geopolitical battles over its resources heat up, we need to step up our efforts to protect it – and quickly.

In the coming months and years we need to campaign boldly - and successfully - to save the Arctic. This is going to need a lot of help from you. So we want to know:

What do you think we should be doing to save the Arctic?

Comment on our blog, share your ideas on Facebook or Tweet with the hashtag #SaveTheArctic.

If you’re in need of inspiration, have a look at our Antarctica campaign, which eventually resulted in the signing of The Protocol on Environmental Protection to the Antarctic Treaty and the establishment of 'World Park Antarctica'.

Campaign to designate both the Arctic and Antarctic as marine reserves where no exploration, or exploitation, can occur.

We need to wake up and treat planet earth as we would our home because that's exactly what it is!

I think we should be looking in to H.A.A.R.P and what effect it is having on the planet. If you don't know what it is check YouTube!

Oil exploration in the Arctic is a huge issue, and needs an equally huge response.  There needs to be political action at the highest level, dealing through organisations like the EU and the United Nations.  In order for this to suceed we need to demonstrate a massive groundswell of public opinion all over the Earth. My suggestion is that Greenpeace links up with other NGO's like FOE and WWF and creates an online petition through Avaaz, 38 degrees and the like.  Once politicians realise just how much public opinion is on their side, they may begin to review their current stance as mere errand boys (and it is mostly boys) to the markets and multi-national corporations, and start legislating for a more sustainable way of life.

Ive been busy crewing and learning how to sail. I would like to work towards starting up big, positive, new generation solutions to the oil addiction problem... We can talk to governments and corporations until we are blue in the face and the ice melts ( or til hell freezes over as one CEO has said...) but we the people have the power to create a change, everyone of us in our daily life choices. I would like there to be a Treaty to protect the Arctic..its going to be much more complicated than the Antarctic cos there are alot of interested states up there but yes we're up for the challenge. Lets do it! Lets do it! Im in!

High impact posters....massive banners on bridges for rush hour commuters to see......images beamed onto public buildings.....not just London though. Some really hard hitting in your face publicity is still needed. There are thousands and thousands of people who either have no idea what is going on (or what is potentially being planned) or have stuck their heads in the sand and need a hard hitting reminder. Need to reach a lot more people and encourage them to protest. More massive peaceful demonstrations are needed.....

I do feel that many people choose to ignore the situation and plug themselves into their latest bit of pocket sized technology.....hence the suggestion of VERY hard hitting images.

I think the best way is to work together with various actoin groups, not only greenpeace but for example avaaz, miliue defensie (NL) and local groups. Let us be heard, not only by goverments but also by the oil companies. Most important for the oil companies and their employees is work, money to feed their families, so if we don't offer them a alternative they won't stop the drilling. confince them with practical sugestions not just sermons.

Someone mentioned H.A.A.R.P in an earlier posting.....

I "youtubed" it.

Very scarey. Very very scarey.

EVERYONE needs to take climate change SERIOUSLY, INCLUDING ALL GOVERNMENTS in the world. The pollution of our planet is continuing to take a toll--the environment is suffering along with the wildlife and people will be next if nothing more happens to stop this train wreck. It is real---many do not even believe it. As far as the Arctic is concerned, we must NOT EVER allow drilling there---it could be the worst disaster ever!! Man has been taking from the planet since the beginning-NOW it's time to start GIVING BACK.~~~~

We need more coordinated action between different countries. The fossil fuel use is still very affordable despite the enormous cost of their externalities. Only a tax burden that discourages consumption could stimulate the generation of alternative technologies.

We must try to stop wasting!!! always you we'll see people ( sometimes teenage ) will throw stuff on the floor or will even throw money, with that money they can try to help any charities. 21st century are already been spoiled with all new polluent objects also war causes also dioxide carbon when bombs are thrown but i've ask few pupils in my class about the pollution.....( that's was sooooo stupid) they said...I don't care about pollution it's just a problem that will be solve by the president...

SERIOUSLY!?!??! pollution can't be solved...

We must grow the new generation with a good mind and not relay on people --''

that's all ;) <3

Focus efforts on influencing the Rio+ 20 zero draft which has a section covering Oceans this time round, can a specific reference be made to the Arctic within that document. I don't know but worth exploring as it will set the sustainable development agenda for the next 20 years. Also look at the legal framework, law of the sea etc and challenge the rights of these 5 arctic states to carve up the area for exploitation without consulting global institutions, after all the impacts of their damaging activities will have far reaching consequences for humankind. Good luck.

What we should be doing to save the Artic is the same as we should be doing to save the planet. The same as we need to allow the planet the space to be our sustained habitat. That is moderate OUR population to match tha available resources! No amount of other procrastination will make any difference.

Use the tried and trusted Greenpeace methods of exposing, and embarrasing, big companies and policy makers into changing their ways.

We need to educate the young on why the artic needs saving. They will be the ones who will be standing for the real change in the coming years.

Just a thought - what would it mean for global trade, to have the Arctic Ocean free of ice?

These greedy Companies are destroying the Earth, the Creatures of this Earth deserve as much chance as we do to survive, as I feel that humans are the invaders, you don't see Animals digging Mines destroying Forests etc so many wonderful Creatures have become exstinct all due to Human activity it has to stop

Regards Sheila

A recent issue of Positive News suggested passing legislation to give  the planet itself legal rights, and making it a crime to carry out actions that damage it.

This would require a radical shift in the way most people think, and I have no idea how to convince governments to go for it.

What about the contribution to global warming and to other environmental detriments caused by the consumpion of animal products? Mostly, this issue is completely neglected in campaigns and other activities by Greenpeace, despite its impact is one of the biggest (even bigger than the impact of transportation emissions).

IT IS VERY IMPORTANT FOR US TO CONTINUE SPEAKING WITH THE LEADERS OF THE GOVERNMENTS, AND REMIND THEM THAT THIS IS THE TOP PRIORITY. THE PUBLIC MUST BE REMINDED ON THE DAILY BASIS, PERHAPS THROUGH THE MEDIA SUCH AS TELEVISION OR RADIO THAT THEY NEED TO GET INVOLVED AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE.

MAYBE ALSO SOME LEGAL SYSTEM LIKE THE ENVIRONMENTAL LAW COULD GET INVOLVED TO SERIOUSLY CHALLENGED THOSE THAT WANT TO ABUSE OUR ENVIRONMENT.

WE SHOULD DO WHATEVER IT TAKES!!

THANK YOU

While I believe the sun to be the main protagonist in global warming, humans are adding fuel to the fire so to speak. We may have averted another iceage, although we have gone too far in the opposite direction.....having said that, I am completely agaisnt the use of fossil fuels, not only does oil extraction rob the earth of its blood (a bit mystical that one) it is also spewing huge amounts of pollution. So, regarding the antartic let us publicise a 'name and shame' list of all organisations and government agencies who are trying to ruin humanity's last wilderness and yes each and everyone one of us must see how to boycott these entities.............by hitting them where it hurts, financially, if enough people participate, the tide can be turned,.

Antartica, like space, must be a testing lab for nothing but adaptation of humans for living on other planets, as virtual world to test such expeditions. And continue to be the world's wildlife park. Anything else is simply exploitation of earth and its peoples.

that's pretty clear to,solution is near, there plenty comments like save the arctic sea,alright...

but we need action, realistic for masses that speaks louder!we all are responsible for this mess and humiliating of the earth we walk onto.we must do it!'cos man belongs to earth but earth does not belong to man!

for beginning we have to lower our comfort or not the decrease our vanities, people it's easy please lower your heathing, fridge, light,tv's a stupid one degree,is that that much, good things come slow and they are deliverable.none wants to go now to pitch tents on antarctic,it does not make sense, imagine 1000 people flooding polar making things worse even it  is good to see thing from the source.let's start from your own homes.

If men exploit oil is because there is a market for oil.  If men exploit minerals such as copper, iron or gold, is only because you and I, all of us, consume those minerals.  If every single conscient men and women on Earth start consuming less and less oil, then we will finish oil and mineral exploitation.  You can't protest against eating cakes if you have a piece of the cake in your mouth.  But the problem is that we, humans, are addicted to oil.  We can't live without it and the human population is growing and growing, faster and faster.  We already reached 7 billion human beings.  And we consume more and more.  In fact, now we need 1.5 times our dear Planet in order to feed all of us; and because we have an unequal distribution of food on Earth, some of us suffer starvation somewhere.  Then, there are two things we have to be serious about:

1.  Stop our massive oil consumption

2.  Control overpopulation

If we can't do that, then we are just filling the holes, instead of blowing the drillers.  Nothing real will come from small "temporal medicine".  We have to deal with the roots of our sickness instead of just sending aspirins.  And please, please ... stop thinking as clans, groups, countries, regions, races ... the environment behaves as one big machine, and if it fails somewhere, all of us will pay for it.  The clanicentric behaviour of the human race, inherited from Neanderthals, will kill us all.  It is not US business anymore ... it concern to all the human kind.  If we continue meeting to solve the environmetal problems between "countries or clans", representing individual interests, we are going nowhere.  I am sick of being a citizen of a country instead of being what I really am:  A living organism born in Planet Earth.

Countries have a strong tendency to pursue their own short term interests to the exclusion of every other country whilst neglecting everyone's long term interests and the future of our planet. I believe there are a number of approaches we can take. Here's two:

1) Publicise what is happenning. The general public are still not sufficiently aware just how serious this issue is and the dire consequences of an ineffective response.

2) Press for a international treaty to protect the Arctic which is analogous to the one in place to protect Antartica.

Governments have to be pressurised to leave the Arctic alone. This vital for the survival of the planet. The big corporations that drill for oil etc. have to be kept out of the Arctic and the only way we can do this is by sheer force of numbers. Let's show governments that we do care and we will not allow corporations to "rule the day" with their greed.

The second step is to keep the Arctic region as a hugh wildlife reserve. People will be allowed to visit but only under strict supervision. Limited accomodation can be offered and of course the money paid will be spent on upkeep of the region. Only picture taking safaris will be allowed!

Help me to get a paper published showing that the rapid warming at the end of the Younger Dryas was caused by the loss of the sea ice in the GIN (Greenland, Iceland and Norwegian) Seas. There will be another runaway warming when the Arctic sea ice disappears.

Cheers, Alastair.

I think a two-fold campaign is needed - firstly to spread awarenessof the issues surrounding the Arctic by telling people how, by doing little things such as measuring the water they need into kettles, turning down their heating a few degrees and making a couple of journeys a week by foot or public transport we will help to cut consumption of resources. Maybe make it some sort of competition where people can earn stars for each action they take?

Then we surely need to start a massive letter or email campaign to the Environment ministers in our governments to tell them how we feel and generally make as much noise as we can.

I think that we should push for a similar treaty protecting the Arctic as we have in Antarctica. It may be too late to stop the ice from melting but at least that way we can protect what lies underneath it.

We must keep the subject in the press, write to our politicians, give talks in schools and demonstrate and campaign as much and as often as possible.

Make an application to have the Arctic added as a World Heritage Park. Then run a global campaign to support it. Once nominated development will be on hold. Once accepted it will be a no-go area for fossil fuel bandits.

Why not declare a state named "Arctica" and we, the people of born kings and queens, all habitants of planet earth, have got the right to protect our republic from damage and harm. Our republic would have passports and a declaration of life rights for all sorts of beings. Each one, who destructs or damages some/one -thing, will be punished by our civilrights court. We could give asylum to climate-refugees. All habitants on earth can be "Arctica"-citizen, but no one has got the right to drill for oil or any other devastation!

The ultimate ambition must be an international agreement through united nations parallel to that covering the antarctic

Ask the oil executives if they have children or grand children. If yes tell them they are a disgrace,as they have no concern about their future, and should be ashamed of themselves.

fighting for a global treaty on non-exploitation of Arctic resources, and pressure Governments to a carbon free development,

Increase information sharing with all citizens (virtual, presencial, magazines,....)

Maybe I'm living in a hopeworld, and preaching to the converted, but if the facts are publicised, publicised, publicised - televised, facebooked, twittered, newspapered, etc - based on factual research, surely that will spring everyone into action? No-one can argue with simple, clear facts. I'm aware that I'm concentrating too much on this country, but surely through international publicity??

Hey Greenpeace,

I think to save the Arctic, more needs to change in Government legislation so we, as homeowners, can make more of a difference. Instead of the Government only backing and advertising wind farms, renewable energy sources should be tailored more to each individual county or area. Where there are rivers, hydropower can be generated and practically guarenteed 365 days a year- thats a lot of energy that doesn't release any CO2 in the process! The government should be supporting more carbon-free ways of producing energy like this and publicising them. If everyone had just a small solar panel in their back garden then it could make such a huge difference. There are so many ways to create energy with renewable resources but it seems to me that they haven't been mentioned since my Geography GCSE! Greenpeace could do a lot to help educate people about the different things that can be set up and they have the power to get the government to listen.

My fingers are crossed for a good year for Greenpeace campaigns.

Peace! Hatty :)

The tide is starting to turn in our favour, the momentum is gathering pace. I talk to more and more people who are starting to understand the importance of change and how soon we need to do it.

Govt and business will realize is only when it is profitable for them because they are short sighted and greedy.

The only thing I can think of is to persuade everyone that the oil is going to run out eventually and we should be looking at alternatives now before it does.

Put human overpopulation on the agenda, we could do with some austerity measures on this issue!

Wean ourselves off fossil fuels!

Put ecocide on the map of Law!

inform thoroughly and convince the public so that the latter can put major pressure on the governments to enforce the necessary environmental laws that forbid the illegal activity of the petrol multinationals.

The world cannot stand by whilst government backed oil companies, who contribute millions to these political parties, kill the arctic off by polluting it with oil. An Antarctic and Arctic Treaty banning all exploitation of oil, gas and other reserves needs to be implemented by the UN and under the umbrella of military force if necessary!

Unless this is done in a very short time, we will reap the whirlwind of human stuipidity. Oil is being used much, much faster than it can ever sustain. At current trends of just 1% growth in consumption globally, assuming current stocks plus a few more finds like the polar regions, and assuming better techniques, it's uneconomic to extract according to my mathematical prediction by 2050 to 2060. This means that we don't need to do this! We can look at alternatives like renewable energy but in particular we can look to stabilise population and energy use. This woudl be a far wiser move than allowing greedy oil magnates the ability to pollute and kill the polar regions!

If we are serious about saving the Arctic and Antarctica we must stop all drilling, researching and whaling and all other assaults and set Sanctuaries to give them the utmost protection against all predators, e.g. the fossil fuel industry. They can't come soon enough. We are all stewards of our Earths' resources and they aren't finite, keep drilling etc., as if there's no tomorrow and one day we'll surely be right. All this was given by God with love, the least we can do is return such love with responsible stewardship of His Creation. Look after the Earths' resources and they'll look after us.

Stephanie

I think you should pobably be supporting nuclear power.

nice! you got me too!

Start a campaign on nature and all that it contibutes to us being able to live and survive (and words chosen to reflect the sharp contrast in how people relate to nature around the world). A steady constant flow of images and words to bring to awareness everything we consume has a relationship with nature and hence our need to value and treat with respect. This includes the importance of the geographical variety of our world and need to treasure. And one of these is to severely limit our travels to regions such as the Arctric - in whatever name people travel to these areas it conveys the message that these are places we can travel to.

Everyone needs to speak louder about the threat to future survival of humanity by our short term desires for choice.

We are on our way. Always moving through the present in to the future. If we could remember where we came from, we would know where we are going. Sounds cryptic? Vague? What I mean to say is that we must think and feel what our actions now will mean for generations to come, for Life on this unique and beautiful planet. And this is happening, the awareness of it is growing day by day, hour by hour. This awareness is spurring us into action, look at what has been happening recently, the Arab spring, the occupy movement, to name only the big ones, there are thousands of other, smaller events, yet all part of the same thing: the awareness that we really are one! All we have to do is change our minds and hearts, spread the word, gather more and more of us and start moving in a new direction. We have a lot of work to do. Many good suggestions are being made here, but I also spotted some despairing ones. To those people I want to say: yes the situation may look desperate but together we CAN save the planet if we all stand together. And we will... we will!

with an attitude of gratitude,

Joost

Debemos luchar por que se declare a esa zona como patrimonio de la humanidad.

There are lots of people with lots of good ideas

Develop 'Arctica' as a world heritage site - but it's probably too late to prevent the worst effects of climate change. That lost ice isn't going to reform.

Start trying to deal with overpopulation - NOW. It needs to be discussed out in the open. Everyone is sidestepping this issue.

Any type of information spreading - use facebook, smartphones, use any celebrities (people all seem to want to know what they think)( Richard Attenburgh is speaking out), link with other organisations like Avaaz - anything to get people worldwide motivated to push all governments to speed up their action, not slow it down, in the fight to prevent the worst damage of climate change.
