Fishy Business in Spain

Posted by Ariana Densham - 10 October 2011 at 11:18am - Comments

This animation highlights some very fishy business we exposed in Spain recently. The case we uncovered, followed a nine-month investigation into the fishy dealings of “Toño”, one of Spain’s notorious fishing barons.   We exposed how his family network has amassed a list of convictions for illegal fishing and are continuing to operate around the world, putting vital fish stocks in danger.

To make matters worse, we found that the Spanish government, with millions of Euros of EU subsides at stake, is turning a blind eye to these rotten practices.

The laws that govern European fishing - the Common Fisheries Policy - are broken. Over the last 30 years, the CFP has been gradually corrupted by the vested interests of European member states, like Spain. The CFP needs to be reformed so that it stops funding illegal fishing practices and instead promotes a healthy and sustainable fishing industry in Europe.

Since the release of our report, the European Commission has responded by saying that they are investigating our allegations. However, this is not good enough.  What is needed is a full, transparent audit into the fishing subsidies given to the Spanish fleet.

To do this, we need to get the UK Fisheries Minister Richard Benyon to exert pressure on the EU to carry out a full audit. The UK government can help to stop these illegal Spanish fishing barons and challenge the vested interests of the Spanish authorities in Brussels.  Please take action now and put this issue on Richard Benyon's radar.

Note: This blog has been edited from the original version. By using an amazing traditional dish of Spain as a way of talking about what could be lost if overfishing continues by the Spanish fishing industry, we unintentionally touched a patriotic nerve. We have removed it to make sure our Spanish colleagues spend their time campaigning to end overfishing instead of trying to explain our British sense of humour.

This is just one example of the rampant corruption within the European Union. Many governments turn a blind eye to the illegal practices of their national companies and, indeed, ignore EU edicts themselves. The EU is institutionally corrupt - as once might expect from an organisation that was conceived in deceit and now exists primarily to line the pockets of a vastly over-inflated adminstrative and polical elite. It is good to see Greenpeace aggressively attacking environmentally issues, but I personally don't think they will have much success against such a behemoth.

One has to ask why HM Gov't has ignored this activity.  Not wanting to rock the boat so to speak or is there more sinister reasons for this.  It is no wonder the British Fishing Fleet has been all but decimated...big money and weak UK Gov't I suspect.  What do you think?

I agree wholeheartedly with the last two comments!  No wonder so many people are taking medication for high blood pressure!  The blatant arrogance of self-seeking politicians - many of them not even elected - just "jobs for the boys"!  Just watching the news or reading a newspaper makes me weep for my country!  Please remember  - we fought wars to prevent being taken over by "bullies" in Europe!  The present "gang" have taken over by stealth!  Keep up the good work Greenpeace!

No hay más que leer los comentarios anteriores para ver el sesgo xenófobo de la noticia, vergonzoso que se culpe a un solo país de un problema global. Los peces os importan una mierda.

STOP RACISM!

This campaign is DISGRACEFUL and blatantly xenophobic.

It
is utterly unacceptable that YOU use my rich cultural culinary heritage
to defend the interests of your organisation. Why not the "Case of the
Rotten Fish and Chips"?

I strongly request that GREENPEACE UK
cancels this campaign with immediate effect and issues a full apology in
international media.

Looking forward to your prompt action,

Daniel

Well, the video can not be seen, but the article may still being read. From Valencia we expect the immediate withdrawal of this article and a correction by Greenpeace UK.
For our part, if you use your article for your the fish & chips, we have nothing more to say.
And of course, paella has NO fish.

Dear Greenpeace Investigation Unit,

You are so stupid... In spite you may have some good reasons to denounce the fishing methods used in Spain, it is clear that you have never tasted a Paella in your life and, therefore you do not know that IT DOESN'T CONTAIN FISH.

Be careful with when using stereotypes, because others might think that since you are English you were so drunk during this investigation that you couldn't find the differences between a Paella and your vomiting.

With this kind of actions you are loosing supports to your denounces.

Best regards,

A Paella lover

Firstly, Fernando2, you should probably look up the word 'racism' in a dictionary.

Secondly, to everyone else, this campaign isn't an attack on Spanish culture - it is a campaign to expose illegal fishing practises in Spain.

How on earth is that remotely xenophobic?

Greenpeace is really rotten itself. There are powerful interests behind it. Boikot to Greenpeace!!!

Sig. Valencià.

To honeybadger101: Please make yourself a favour and change dictionaries.

If you only do one thing today, go to www.tolerance.org and test yourself and your assumptions at http://www.tolerance.org/hiddenbias

You should also spend some time carefully reading the Holocaust webpage at http://remember.org/guide/History.root.stereotypes.html

You will learn:

1. Stereotyping often results from, and leads to, prejudice and bigotry.

2. Unchecked prejudice and bigotry leads to discrimination, violence, and, in extreme cases, genocide.

3. Prejudice can be spread by the use of propaganda and inflamed by demagogues.

4. Language, particularly slang, is often used to dehumanize
members of certain groups of people, and this dehumanization is a
precursor of discrimination, isolation, and violence.

honeybadger10, make no mistake. This campaign has BLATANT XENOPHOBIC TRAITS. The cause, as fair as it might be, doesn´t justify the use of xenophobia.

Please don´t ashame your children by standing on the side of xenophobia.

Articles like this just discredits an institution like Greenpeace. What a pituful way of catching readers attention. Unfortunally this type of articles will only be upsetting people with strong cultural heritage and traditions that has nothing to do with the content of the article. Seems that, Ariana Densham, the Greepeace writer, might need to take some more writting and manners lessons and improve her grace. Before you act, THINK!

Ariana, you must apologise NOW!

By the way, I am thinking of making something funny with the writers picture, the one next to article tittle. Ideas are welcome.

Yes, Paella does have fish! and octopus/shrimkp/crab/squid/it is a stew of many different seafoods and was tasty back in the days before I ceased eating all seafood as I do not support over fishing/consumption of aquatic mercury and other toxins through seafood.

Oh and I gave Daniel an answer over at POA.

Cor some people do get wound up by the simplest things, and if your
sense of national identity is so weak, that you think of any mention of
Paella - as a racist attack of all things Spansih - then I'm afraid you
need to chill a bit.

The issue here is EU taxpayers money going
to criminal gangs, and in this case Spanish criminal gangs. Until the
Spanish government acts to stop this outrage, then this remains a very
real, and well deserved blow to Spains reputation.

End Spanish corruption - Stop overfishing - Eat Paella

Greenpeace should have included ALL the other EU countries that are breaking the law by overfishing - get BBC Panorama on to it !  Spain is certainly not the only one.  It is the 27 member states of the EU (including the UK) whose Governments are not doing nearly enough to stop this crime.  As for corruption, it is rampant in most of the 'Western' economies now, including the UK's. Overfishing (and toxic dumping in the oceans) is a very serious problem world-wide and if nothing is done, fish will soon be a thing of the past, worldwide. Stop these petty arguments; European Governments (including the UK) need to unite to save our fish and oceans. Greenpeace, you need to expand the campaign.  Carry on doing what you're doing, thanks.

Straight quote from Alex Spring: "if your sense of national identity is so weak"

ISN´T THAT A JUDGEMENT ON MY NATIONAL IDENTITY? ISN´T THAT XENOPHOBIA?

Another good example of the blatant xenophobic traits of some of the supporters of this campaign. And the reason why we are fighting this nonsense.

Alex, don´t ashame your children by putting yourself on the side of xenophobia.

Jesus!

How many hate comments... Well, I am Spanish as well, and first question that pops up in my head is... Have you guys actually seen the video? I don't think so... I mean, unless you have the understanding abilities of a 5 yo, how could you get to the conclussion that the video is attacknig Spain or the Paella?  I mean... do you really think that Greenpeace is attacking the Paella, seriously? What would be next? Attacking the gazpacho?

Guys, relax... and focus on the real issue here, you want your kids to have fish when they grow up? Then open your eyes! That's the real issue.

To Ariana, congratulations for such a great campaign! Hopefully you guys will increase awareness on this issue!

Wow. Hey, let's not talk about the issues, let's make up some pretended offence.

To those screaming 'racism' with one breath, then picking on a named individual in the next, how exactly did you get up on such a high horse? And is it lonely up there?

The communication here is clearly TO a UK audience (who, racist as this may sound, do associate paella with fish!!!). If you think that Greenpeace wouldn't talk about fish and chips, or isn't working on CFP or fishing anywhere else, then you seriously need some training on how to use Google!

Rather than the smokescreen of pseudo-offence, and the attempt by a few (yes, we know how the internet works, LOL, etc!) to create a pretend 'outrage', I'd much rather hear the views of the complainees on overfishing, perverse subsidies, and the fact that a few people are making a lot of money out of trashing our oceans.

Shame on those exploiting the oceans, with our money. And shame on those putting up a smokescreen on their behalf.

Keep up the good work Greenpeace. You can't make a reformed CFP without upsetting a few vested interests.

Typical xenophobic nonsense and extremely disappointing coming from Greenpeace. I have no problems with addressing fishing issues but the way the video portrays the Spanish and their food is disgusting, detracts from the real issues and is in fact counterprodictive. If we are to resort to stereotyping races like in that infamous comedy show "Mind your Language" from which it looks like your video takes inspiration from, then perhaps we can look forward to comedy videos over that most polluted sea in the world, the Irish Sea, contaminated by, yours truly, Sellafield. Fish and Chips anyone?

Yes. Duh. Because Greenpeace has never done any campaigning against Sellafield, huh?

Sasheet, thank you for uncovering the different treatment that Greenpeace did of the Sellafield campaign and this one. Why the difference? Why the campaign about a british case wasn´t treated with the same sensationalism and "british humour" than this one?

Your two cents to uncover more xenophobic traits in this campaign are greatly appreciated. Please post more cases where Greenpeace uses factual posts for british cases, and treats the foreigners to a bit of "british humour".

Thank you very much indeed.

And why didn't you title "rotten fish and chips" to your campaign instead?
That would have been perfect british sense of humour...

You are such hypocrite guys.
