Exciting news has reached our whale embassy! The plans for the proposed whale meat factory have been shelved days before the International Whaling Commission (IWC) is due to meet.
The decision was reported in a South Korean newspaper and is a courageous move by the government.
By scrapping the plans South Korea is showing that it does not support whaling and we hope this means that they will not bow to pressure from Japan to vote for a resumption in commercial whaling.
The IWC starts on June 20th and will be a further chance for the South Korean government to prove that it is really opposed to killing whales. It's estimated that Japan, Norway and Iceland will kill over 2,000 whales this year alone.
While the news here is encouraging , the battle to save the whales is far from over. Our whale embassy has been in Ulsan for two months and our volunteers will stay there throughout the IWC meeting continuing to talk with local people and calling for an end to whaling.
Visit our Come back whales weblog for daily reports straight from the Whale Embassy.
