Part of the Trident: we don't buy it tour blog

Tony and the Greenpeace climbers

Or a bomb anyway. The government is voting tomorrow on Blair's plan to replace the Trident nuclear weapons system. With a rebellion brewing in the Labour benches, Blair will be counting on the Tories to secure the vote and build his weapons of mass destruction.

tony-heart-WMD-t.jpgOn Sunday the BBC reported that their poll indicated that two thirds of Labour MPs plan to vote against the government and oppose the Trident replacement. Today Deputy leader of the Commons Nigel Griffiths resigned over the issue. The public's view is shifting too, with only 24% of the public supporting the government's plans to replace Trident.

Time is running out and we wanted to get a message to MP's as they arrived at Westminster this morning. Four Greenpeace climbers scaled a crane outside parliament and dropped a huge banner that says: TONY 'heart' WMD.

One of the volunteers on the crane, Cat Dorey, will be calling MPs from her position to remind them that the true cost of building a new generation of nuclear weapons to replace Trident will be at least £76bn and could rise as high as £100 billion. It also threatens to break international law under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

"Trident is a cold war relic designed to destroy Russian cities. If MPs buckle under pressure from Tony Blair and vote to renew it, the repercussions will be felt around the world. We can't oppose proliferation of WMD if we're building them at home," said Cat from the scene this morning.

tony-heart-WMD-m.jpgTony Blair had promised a national debate on Trident but this is being rushed through quicker than a shotgun wedding. The real threat is climate change and the billions earmarked for Trident could help make Britain the world's first low carbon economy.

Instead of leading the way in greenhouse gases reductions, we're leading the world down the path to a new nucelar arms race. Mohammed ElBaradei, the head of the UN nuclear watchdog said in London recently: "Britain cannot expect other countries to refrain from acquiring nuclear weapons if it upgrades its trident nuclear weapons system."

So if you oppose new nuclear weapons, NOW is the time to act - there are three things we need you to do:

1. Please email your MP today and tell them to vote for a nuclear-free future. Urge them to vote for maximizing the rebellion against the government's plans by backing the cross party amendment sponsored by John Trickett MP. This is a new amendment so even if you've already contacted your MP please do so again.

2. Join the emergency lobby. It will run between 1pm and 6pm on the day of the vote. If you want to join it please contact your MP today to schedule an appointment on Wednesday. There will be CND stewards at the St. Stephen's Entrance of the House of Commons to provide you with any information you may need, and to direct you to Committee Room 16 where you can pick up briefing papers and receive advice on lobbying.

tony-heart-WMD-b.jpg3. Come and join us at the emergency rally. This will run from 1-8pm on Wednesday in Parliament Square. We need to show the government that the public do not support building new nuclear weapons. This is about all of our futures and the kind of world we want to live in. If you cant make the rally then check out information about other protests - both in London and other parts of the country by visiting www.tridentvoteday.org.uk
