If you were poised to be the biggest car company in the world raking in annual profits of £5bn, you think you'd feel pretty confident about yourself.

Even if you felt a little insecure, a cool £1.5bn advertising budget could iron out some of the less-than-savoury aspects of your appearance. Besides, £1.5bn buys a lot of botox.

Big news today for the planet – a huge research project triggered by climate sceptic claims of 'dodgy data' has underlined a key truth: our planet is warming dangerously fast – by a whole degree in the last 60 years.

Today, I have the honour of congratulating Greenpeace photographer Daniel Beltra on becoming the Veolia Environment Wildlife Photographer of the Year. Daniel made his winning picture for Greenpeace, of oil-oaked brown pelicans at a temporary bird-rescue facility in Fort Jackson, Louisiana, while documenting the environmental impacts caused by the BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill disaster in the Gulf of Mexico.

A guest blog from Ben Amunwa, campaigner with oil industry watchdog Platform

This time last year I was standing in a vast pool of oily water. It used to be a fish pond for local villagers, but now everywhere was coated with oil and the stench of petroleum was overpowering. A light rain was falling.

Our banner at Frankfurt Motor Show and VW's counter protest!

You'd struggle to make this up.

Moments ago, our activists dropped a huge banner at the Frankfurt motor show - the biggest in the world - to highlight VW's hypocrisy over its environmental policy (more info here).

Then something spectacular happened.

Our campaign to turn VW away from its dark lobbying practices has entered a new phase.

Today we need you to put pressure where Volkswagen’s massive advertising budgets can’t dominate: on social media.

Here’s what you can do right now:

Volkswagen is lobbying against environmental laws

Today our climbers scaled VW’s headquarters in Germany while other activists projected a massive message onto the side of London’s Battersea power station – where Volkswagen is participating in a green car show.

Our actions kick off a new phase in our VW campaign – we will not let the car giant’s lobbying continue to threaten our planet.

Volkswagen says it wants to be the most eco-friendly car manufacturer in the world. But it’s spending millions trying to stop laws to make cars more efficient and cut climate change emissions.

On September 17, Greenpeace is launching an international film competition. We need your help to expose the real VW – the one behind the billboards.

Since we launched our campaign to turn VW away from the Dark Side the response has been phenomenal. Over a quarter of a million people have joined the Rebellion and a huge proportion – over 40,000 of them – are Volkswagen drivers.

VW’s official response so far has been to act ‘surprised’ and point to their most efficient cars as proof of their environmental credentials.

We still have to turn VW away from the Dark Side, but we’ve scored a small victory for internet freedom along the way.

A few days into our campaign while our Volkswagen film was the most shared ‘ad’ in the world, YouTube suspended it after a complaint from Lucasfilm.
