This year, as we've been working closely with UK small scale fishermen, one thing has become abundantly clear: the EU Common Fisheries Policy, or CFP, is not working. Full stop.

The ocean is not a factory

It seems the captain of Britain’s largest fishing boat isn’t partial to a spot of tea, despite a kind invitation from John Vidal, Environment Editor of the Guardian, as he radioed the vessel from our ship the Arctic Sunrise, off the coast of Mauritania. (See for yourself in John’s video, above.)

Floating fish factories are plundering fish stocks off West Africa

Our friends in Greenpeace Holland have today painted the sides of three of Europe’s largest factory fishing vessels in the port of IJmuiden, identifying the amount of EU subsidies these ships have received - subsidies which enable them to plunder the waters of West Africa.

Bycatch on Spanish bottom-trawler in the North Atlantic

In the deep sea northwest of the UK, bottom trawlers are destroying ancient and mostly undiscovered ecosystems. They are part of an unsustainable fishing industry kept afloat by EU taxpayer subsidies.

Last week, three African fishermen - Karim of Senegal, Celestino of Cape Verde and Issa of Mauritania - were in the UK for the African Voices tour to deliver an urgent message: that EU fleets must stop stealing fish from African Waters.

The disastrous effects of overfishing by European fleets aren’t confined to our continent's waters: destructive EU vessels are now exploiting the waters of the world’s poorest nations - threatening ecosystems, depriving local fishermen of their livelihoods and the food security of their communities. So Greenpeace have brought them and their stories to Europe.
