Exactly what is Mandelson doing for APP?

A Guardian investigation has revealed that Asia Pulp and Paper has contracted the former EU trade commissioner Lord Peter Mandelson (aka The Prince of Darkness) as an advisor. Mandelson has an impressive address book but, as this case shows, little regard for how those he advises make their money. Clearly issues around illegality and the fate of Indonesia's rainforests don’t concern this particular Labour peer.

A few days ago, we revealed that Asia Pulp and Paper, the world’s most notorious rainforest destroyer, has lost more customers, with lots of big clients walking away because APP keeps on using Indonesian rainforest fibre in its products. And last week, APP’s ill-judged advertising campaign, ‘APP Cares’, was called ‘misleading’ by advertising standards officials in Holland.

Deported while working to expose Asia Pulp and Paper's lies and greenwash about deforestation

Until two days ago, I was in Indonesia. I'd travelled there to work with colleagues in Jakarta and Sumatra on our continuing campaign to end the devastation of the country's magnificent rainforests.

But after an extremely intense few days, I left the country prematurely on Wednesday evening. I had been due to stay longer and had a business visa to allow me to do that, but the advice we were receiving was  that if I stayed it was likely to bring more risk to my colleagues working there.

Earlier this week, we released some sad, shocking footage showing the slow and gruesome death of a Sumatran tiger that became trapped within an Asia Pulp and Paper (APP) concession in Sumatra's Riau province. The video footage also revealed that in the same APP area, recent forest clearance had taken place in an area identified as tiger habitat.

Lego have promised to stop wrapping their toys in rainforest destruction

When Ken dumped Barbie last month, Mattel was not the only toy company put under the spotlight for their role in rainforest destruction. Our investigation showed that Hasbro, Lego and Disney are also wrapping toys in paper products coming from Indonesian rainforests.

The first of these toy companies to announce more substantive action is Lego, who have released a new statement on this issue today.

Destroying Sumartran rainforest to make way for APP pulpwood plantations

For a while now I’ve been watching closely as Sinar Mas’s pulp and paper arm, Asia Pulp & Paper (APP) has cranked up its PR machine to start spouting out more and more nonsense, trying to bamboozle their customers (and others) about the reality of their operations in Indonesia.
