Greenpeace today called on the British, French and Japanese governments to ban the first shipment of plutonium fuel due to depart imminently from Europe to Japan. The international environmental organisation announced that it is sending MV Greenpeace, currently in Dublin, to Barrow, near Sellafield, where part of the deadly cargo is to be loaded. The SV Rainbow Warrior is currently travelling to Cherbourg France, where the rest of the deadly cargo will be loaded.

Collapse of whale meat market stops hunt in Norway

Greenpeace have documented that Norway's two largest whale-meat warehouses are full, with some boxes dating back to 1986, the year when the international moratorium on commercial whaling was taking effect. Norges Rafisklag - the Norwegian wholesaler controlling the entire raw fish market in the country - asked whalers to stop providing whale meat because it has not been selling well this year.

Norwegian whalers have stopped whaling in most areas, although some are still hunting in the North Sea whaling grounds.

Greenpeace - campaigning against toxic toys

Greenpeace today welcomed the growing activities by various governmental bodies in the European Union against environmental pollution caused by polyvinyl chloride (PVC). "Within only one week we have seen three official initiatives on PVC which highlight the environmental hazards caused by PVC plastic" said Axel Singhofen from Greenpeace.

The European Commission is obliged to cancel the market approval for all genetically engineered Bt-crops according to an independent legal opinion prepared for Greenpeace. Allowing the Bt maize crops to be grown commercially while halting the approval process for similar new crops is a breach of EU law.
