Canvass your MP about cutting emissions

Canvass your MP

A brand new campaign has been launched in which you can Canvass your MP to bring in tougher targets on cutting CO2 emissions. This website was created within a week thanks to climate campaigners working round the clock to make it available to you to take action. The climate change bill proposed by the government promises emissions cuts of just 60 per cent. However, a much higher figure of at least 80 per cent is required for realistically tackling climate change.

Amazon protected from soya growers for another year

We have some truly excellent news to share about the ongoing campaign to protect the Amazon rainforest. The moratorium on deforestation for new soya plantations and the use of forced labour - which was the result of our McDonald's campaign two years ago - has been extended for another year. The original announcement by the major soya traders in Brazil only ran until this July, but now they've signed up to a further 12 months.

Czech police attack Peaceland protest camp

Our peaceful efforts to keep the nuclear arms race at bay were crushed by Czech military police this week. Peaceland, a newly formed state sits on a site earmarked for a radar station for US anti-missile defence on Czech soil. Dubbed as part of the ‘Son of Star Wars' project, this American anti-missile circuit is apparently intended to destroy enemy rockets headed for the US, and Greenpeace activists responded to this ludicrous plan by inhabiting the proposed site and declaring independence, thus forming the new country.

Paper plane flashmob on 3rd July

Posted by saunvedan - 12 June 2008 at 3:13pm - Comments

Paper planeIf you thought that the Terminal 5 flashmob and the Big NO! was all that would be done to oppose the third runway then you were wrong. On 3 July, get ready to flashmob once more and launch paper planes at the Department for Transport, and tell transport secretary Ruth Kelly why plans for the third runway must be scrapped.

Download a paper plane here and don't forget to write a message to Transport Secretary Ruth Kelly on it. The plan is to turn up outside Department for Transport (corner of Marsham St and Horseferry Road) at 11am sharp. If you've still got your red t-shirts from T5; even better but a paper plane is an absolute must. At 11.03 (precisely) those wearing ‘Stop Airport Expansion' t-shirts will reveal them, and then we will all launch our paper planes in the direction of the Department.

Undermining international opinion on whaling

Fin Whale

It’s been reported that, after a gap of 20 years, Iceland and Norway may have resumed the export of fin and minke whale meat to Japan. These countries continue to blatantly defy the International Whaling Commission’s ban on commercial whaling, and any trade in whale meat also undermines the ban on trading in whale products under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species.

Thousands say NO to a 3rd runway

Big NO

The Make a NOise Carnival on Saturday saw thousands of people gather to oppose the building of a 3rd runway at Heathrow airport. Forming a human chain to spell out ‘NO’ to Heathrow expansion, they sent a clear message to the government’s plans that was large enough to be seen by planes overhead. The proposed 3rd runway will add an extra 900 flights a day which will make it impossible for us to hit our climate change targets. Also, the population of the entire village of Sipson would be displaced by the expansion leading to the bulldozing of 750 homes.

Japan bans power crazy bulbs

Bulb Japan is the latest country to introduce a ban on inefficient incandescent light bulbs following the likes of Cuba, Venezuela, Australia and Ireland. Much to our delight, the Japanese government is keen to move from incandescent bulbs to energy-saving compact fluorescent ones to reduce carbon emissions and energy use. Why can’t our own government take inspiration from these countries and ban power hungry bulbs for good? The global trend is moving from conventional technologies to more eco-friendly ones as we saw in the case of Ireland where the incandescent bulb was banned a couple weeks ago. If we were to ban power crazy bulbs here we would cut our carbon emissions by 5 million tonnes.

Amazon destruction endangering stability of the world's climate

Huge swathes of the Amazon are being destroyed for soya planting

As delegates, scientists and environmentalists from nearly 190 countries continue to thrash out a new climate change agreement in Bali, a new WWF report warns that destruction of the Amazon rainforest has now reached an ecological tipping point.
