How to Specify Good Wood

How to Specify Good Wood can help architects and specifiers choose environmentally-friendly timber

As an architect, construction company or other specifier who regularly makes use of timber, you can be a positive influence on management practices in forest areas around the world. That's why we've produced a unique CD-ROM to help you make the right choice when deciding what type of wood to use in your building projects and so play your part in protecting the world's ancient forests.

How to Specify Good Wood is a step-by-step guide on how to ensure the timber used in your construction projects does not come from illegal or destructive logging. Featuring contributions from a former Environment Minister, independent timber traders, builders merchants and architects, it provides all the information you need to specify timber from reputable, well-managed sources.

The CD includes:

  • Environmental and social reasons for specifying good wood and the risks of not doing so.
  • Understanding sustainability and certification. Using case studies and examples of certification schemes we explain why only wood certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is internationally recognised as sustainable.
  • Practical guidance on how sustainable wood can be specified and purchased.
  • A Good Wood Guide which uses a green, amber and red rating scheme for a number of well-known timbers, highlighting any links to illegality, social conflict and/or ancient forest destruction. The guide also identifies FSC certified alternatives. A fold out wall-chart of the Good Wood Guide will be included with your copy of the CD-ROM.

Sorry, but we can only post CD-ROMs to UK addresses.
