I am of the generation that lived through the environmental crusades of the 1970s and 1980s, and at that time I did nothing to help. Now I fear for my planet and my grandchildren because of our carelessness and our destructiveness.
I see no justification for believing that one species, ours, has a greater right to the resources of the world than any other or that our right to survive and thrive is greater than any other’s. Greenpeace recognises that there is a moral duty ‘to ensure the ability of the Earth to nurture life in all its diversity’.
I have campaigned to protect the climate, the rainforests, the oceans and for peace. I have helped Greenpeace to stop the 3rd runway at Heathrow; we have persuaded Nestle, John West, Hasbro, Mattel, HSBC and others to change their business practices and we have changed Government policy in the UK and abroad. What keeps me going? I have two choices: I can hide my head with, ‘For Heaven’s sake, how can we be so stupid?’ when I read that BMW opposes stronger emissions laws, or that Canada is abandoning the Kyoto treaty. Or I can take positive action with Greenpeace.
Despite our successes and our efforts, the planet isn’t going to get better any time soon. And I know that it won’t be long until a grandchild will ask, ‘Grandpa, what did you do to stop tis mess?’ I have a good answer. I want to share it.
