I first heard about Greenpeace at a lunchtime talk many years ago when I was a student, and was struck with their direct approach in taking action to tackle the world's environmental crises. I studied biology at university and then worked for several years in a government environmental organisation, so the wonders and delights of the natural world are very much a passion for me. I've also been fortunate enough to work overseas on environmental issues in Uganda and Thailand, and now do similar work here at home on a freelance basis. In my spare time I'm a keen swimmer, runner, and internet surfer.
I've been directly involved with Greenpeace on and off since the mid 1990s, when I joined a big group of Greenpeace activists who occupied the rooftops at the Sellafield nuclear plant to highlight the dangers of radioactive pollution from Sellafield. More recently, I've become a member of the local Greenpeace network which meets in my home town of Reading and take part in the group's street activities, and sometimes in national campaign actions with other Greenpeace supporters.
I became one of Greenpeace's Greenspeakers three or four years ago and have talked about our work to quite a wide range of audiences – Rotary Club members, environmental studies students, and members of professional institutes. I like to talk to audiences that have lots of questions and will challenge me about Greenpeace's approach to the environment – making me reconsider my own views and examine my reasons for staying involved with Greenpeace.
