For the last few weeks, the Bethnal Green network has been campaigning against BP who have been in the press a fair bit lately with their mess in the Gulf of Mexico< and a lot has also been written about it on the Greenpeace blog.
None content with trashing the Gulf, BP is also looking at messing up the Boreal forest in Alberta, Canada.
Alberta is home to the world’s second largest oil reserves known as the tar sands and BP wants a piece of pie. I recommend you read this excellent blog post that gives a good idea of what this is all about. Put it simply the methods used to extract this oil are incredibly pollutive, way more than conventional oil extraction (hard to believe but true) which is why Greenpeace is opposed to it.
BP is currently looking at investing in a venture called Sunrise. Greenpeace and many others want them not to. You can find out more about what Greenpeace has been up to on this here.
Greenpeace is also running a competition for the redesign of the BP logo and are inviting people to vote for their favourite design. Have a look at the logos here and vote for one.
Bethnal Green, like other networks has been busy explaining the aims of the campaign to the public. A few weeks ago we took part in a London-wide day of campaign, which ended with about 50 people taking part in a protest outside a BP garage in central London.
Since then we have taken part in some of the daily presentations outside BP’s head office in London and will be going back down on Thurday 29 July.
Recently we took the campaign to the 1234 Shoreditch festival.
If you would like to get involved in this campaign then cast a vote for re-banding of BP’s logo, get in touch to take part in a presentation at their HQ or come along to the next meeting on the 5th of August at the Approach Tavern to find out how you can take part in some street campaigning.
