A conversation with Andrew about saving the Arctic

Posted by Anne Cauvin - 27 June 2012 at 2:34pm - Comments

On Saturday whilst taken part in Greenpeace’s international day of action in Broadway market I had the following conversation with a little boy who was sat on the floor, playing alone.

« Hello. How are you? »  I asked

« I am good » he answered.

« Why are you alone? »

« Because my parents are there »

I looked around to check and saw them.

« What‘s your name? » I asked

« Andrew »

« Anne, nice to meet you »

« And how old are you? »

«  I am 5 years old and 4 months. » He said proudly.

« Do you want to have some fun stickers? »

« yeaaaass ! What is written on it? »

« Save the arctic »

« Is it a band? »

Children are magic. I smiled at him and said :

« No, it could be but no. It’s a space at the top of the world. It is melting. There are a lot of animals living there and soon they won’t have a home anymore. That’s why we have to save them »

« Which animals live there? »

« There for example is a polar bear. » I said showing him the sticker. « it’s him »

« He looks cool. If they don’t have home they can come to mine. » This boy is amazing.

« You’re really nice but I’m not sure your mum will appreciate that. »

« What sound does it make?»

And here we go. I am now imitating all the animals represented

« A whale: mouuuuuuu » (have you ever try to do their sound ? impossible !)

Andrew was laughing at me, he pointed at the iceberg and asked again

« What sound does this one make?»

I told him it is not an animal but an iceberg and answered :

« I guess Drip drop because it’s melting.

« Why it is melting?, What does that mean? »

« That means the earth is warming up and the climate is changing. Did you notice it is raining a lot while we are in summer and it’s supposed to be sunny. There are also some very bad bad people who are using the melting of the ice to find oil, so it will melt faster. »

« And can we do something? » he asked rightly

« Yes some organization like Greenpeace are doing something but it doesn’t have the same power as a government. So the world needs to act, and get governments who are not taking action, to act faster. That’s why we ask them to sign our scroll to save the arctic»

« People are mad if they don’t do it!!»

I smiled and said goodbye. This boy was so right.

So for the polar bears, Andrew’s future and for all the other reasons we have to continue the fight to save the Arctic.
