Guerrilla gardeners plant apple trees

AppleTree

A few months ago Greenpeace planted an orchard on the Airplot site, the plot of land it owns in the heart of Sipson (the village that will be destroyed if the third runway at Heathrow is built). Apple trees are historically important to Sipson because Richard Cox, who originally bred the Cox apple in the 1850's near Sipson is also buried there.

Since the orchard was planted Greenpeace groups across the country have been planting apple trees and orchards that have been twinned with the one in Sipson. Back here in the Midlands however Birmingham City Council have refused to give us permission to plant any Apple trees, this probably has a lot to do with Birmingham Airports own expansion plans.

So we’ve been on the look-out for other locations in the West Midlands where we might have more luck. However it seems that someone has beaten us to it. A group of Guerrilla gardeners from Birmingham who have been following the Airplot campaign contacted us and sent us this picture.

It seems they have done a bit of Guerrilla gardening in Edgbaston and planted two Apple trees during the night in a show of solidarity with our campagin.
