Last weekend saw us return to the Moseley Folk Festival after our success at last years festival and the Mostly Jazz Festival a few months before. The festival ran from Friday 3rd September till Sunday 5th at Moseley Park and all the local pubs. We were glad that we were able to have a stall and a presence again this year as the festival is becoming something of a legendary event in Birmingham and is always a good place to get people involved in campaigns. There were also quite a few other NGO’s and charities at the festival such as Friends of the Earth, Oxfam and Amnesty International.
We didn’t actually have a specific campaign to take to the festival as the Rebranding the BP Logo campaign which focused on BP’s involvement in the Tar Sands has now become the more broader Go Beyond Oil campaign which is about stopping our addiction to oil and in particular the fact that because oil is running out the oil companies are taking greater risks with the environment to get harder to reach oil and more unconventional sources of oil such as the Canadian Tar sands, deep water drilling (which caused the recent spill in the Gulf of Mexico) and drilling in the Artic.
We did however take our BP Logo along so that we could tell people about our recent activities at BP petrol stations and also about the new Go Beyond Oil campaign. Another recent campaign we were talking to people about was the Palm Oil forests campaign and about recent Greenpeace successes with getting Unilever, Nestle and HSBC to stop using Sinar Mas), the company who are responsible for massive deforestation in Indonesia for palm oil and pulp plantations. We were greatly helped in our efforts to get this message across by the presence of our very own Orang-utan who’s home is threatened because of the deforestation. This proved to be our star attraction since a lot of people wanted photos taken which can be viewed below by clicking on the thumbnails (we're still in the process of uploading the photos so keep checking the site as they'll be up soon)
So our aim was mainly to raise awareness of what Greenpeace has been up to recently and what we’re going to be doing over the next few months but we also managed to raise a bit of money as well which was a bonus.
The festival itself was a great weekend with some memorable acts such as the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain, The Divine Comedy, The Destroyers , The Unthanks and Donovan
