On Saturday 23rd members of the Birmingham & Black Country Greenpeace Group held a protest outside the forecourt of the Shell petrol station in Kingsheath, Birmingham. We handed in a letter to be given to the manager of the forecourt from John Sauven executive director of Greenpeace UK explaining why we are opposed to Shell drilling for oil in the Artic. To me it’s a simple choice, we either do nothing about our addiction to our ever depleting oil reserves, meaning we have to go to increasingly extreme lengths to keep our way of life going such as extracting oil from the Tar Sands in Canada, or risking the destruction of one of the few pristine eco systems left on the planet. Or we can start thinking about a post carbon world, where we don’t destroy the land bases on which we depend.
We stayed outside the forecourt for about an hour handing out leaflets to passers by and motorists leaving the petrol station. This is the start of a big campaign, perhaps one of Greenpeaces biggest, especially considering what is a stake. Click here for more indormation and how you can help.
