On Saturday morning Greenpeace took action against Volkswagen by targeting its forecourts around the UK and Europe.

Despite its image as one of the worlds greenest car manufactures the reality is that Volkswagen is far from being green.  As the biggest car manufacture in Europe Volkswagen has a lot of influence, but its using this position to lobby against key climate polices in Europe. It has lobbied hard against the introduction of vehicle and fuel efficiency standards in Europe and the US.

On top of this Volkswagens most fuel efficient cars only account for 6% of the groups sales and come with a high artificially inflated price tag.

Greenpeace launched the campaign a few months ago with a spoof version of the popular Volkswagen Star Wars advert. This theme continued on Saturday when activists accompanied by a Stormtropper occupied the showroom and forecourt of the Birmingham Volkswagen dealership and urged them to turn away from the dark side. We eventually left when the police asked us to but continued to make our presence felt outside. We got a lot of support from passing traffic and one person even pulled up and got out their car to find out what we were doing to show us some support.

This was happening simutaniousy in 54 other showrooms in Europe including London, Leeds, Bristol, Glasgow and Newcastle.
