On Saturday 3rd November Paula, the Greenpeace polar bear, went back to visit Bristol Zoo, where she made so many new friends last Summer. To be honest she found the lower temperatures much more to her liking, as back in August she suffered a lot from the heat. Which was exactly the main reason for her visit, because she has heard about something called ‘global warming’ and she suspects that this may be the reason why the Arctic ice has been melting at an unheard of rate lately. This is a huge problem for her, because she needs the ice to go hunting in the Spring and Summer so that she can hibernate through the Arctic winter and produce her cubs. Sadly she knows of several family members who have drowned because the distance between the ice floes was just too great. So this is why she came with her friends from Greenpeace to enlist the help of the children at the Zoo and their parents. The plan was to ask them to text ARCTIC and their name to 60002 completely free of charge and put their name on a special petition to ask the United Nations to declare her home, the Arctic, a global sanctuary. Then no oil companies will come drilling for oil in Arctic waters with the inevitable risk of causing terrible pollution to her beautiful pristine home and killing many other Arctic creatures. What is more they are also increasing the dangerous global warming!
Paula was thrilled by the large number of children and parents who agreed to sign her petition and also by the fact that she was joined later in the day by some small polar bear cubs (Leo 6 and Robin 4 in disguise) who worked really hard on her behalf. So a huge friendly bear hug to everyone who made her day so worthwhile.
