To celebrate 40 Years of Greenpeace, we put on a film show last Wednesday evening.

We began the evening by chatting and sampling the delicious snacks (including Fi's goat cheese loaf).

Before showing the recent prize-winning VW spoof adverts, Richard B gave an overview of  how Volkswagen use greenwash to exaggerate their green credentials.

Fi and Paul gave a talk on the Alberta tar sands using photo slides to illustrate their description of the devastated landscapes.

We then watched Greenpeace highlights clips from 2011.  Natasha and Carol described recent Cairn Energy and Shell actions and the ongoing threat to the pristine Arctic from oil exploration.

The main film was the hour-long “40 Years of Making Waves” that covered the history of Greenpeace from its formation against the background of nuclear testing in the Pacific in 1971.  The film was a balanced description of the highs and lows of Greenpeace history, including the sinking of Rainbow Warrior by the French Secret Service in 1985 right up to the launch of Rainbow Warrior III in 2011.

We had 30 attendees for the event so were pleased to meet many committed local Greenpeace supporters and others who were curious to learn more.

Thank you to Bristol County Sports Club (a venerable local institution) for hosting us, Richard L for being a very able MC for the evening, Adam for togging up as Stormtrooper Brian – a great team effort from everyone in fact!
