On Sunday (17th June) many members of the Bristol East group were out and about raising funds for Greenpeace. Richard L, Loz and Sue were taking part in the well established and popular sponsored event - Bristol's Biggest Bike Ride - along with an estimated 5,500 other cyclists. The threat of showers held off to make it a very successful event.
Across in Bath a strong contingent of Bristol East members were helping collect 'donations' at the gates of the fifth (and maybe last) Widcombe Rising community festival. I think we all agreed what a great occasion 'Wid Ris' was - a huge good humoured crowd, whacky entertainment for all the family and a great atmosphere. As in previous years Greenpeace were invited to collect donations at the four entrances to the festival and the organisation gets a cut of the profits. More photos can be viewed on our Flickr site.
Huge thanks to Julie, John and Paula from Bath Greenpeace for their slick organisation - the sandwiches were very much appreciated! And, well done to Adam, Carol, Fi, Ian and Max, Iain, Mark, Natasha and Richard B for helping the festival goers part with their money! The quids and pennies have been counted and a fantastic £1332 was raised during the afternoon.
Widcombe Rising was started 10 years ago as a 'protest' festival to highlight the problem of traffic thundering down the main street. However, local residents were overjoyed to hear that the local authority had agreed to the long-awaited 'bypass' which would solve the problem at last. Great news, but there is now speculation over whether the 2014 Widcombe Rising will be organised. Get the full story here.
If it does go ahead then no doubt Bristol East will be there to help out if asked again!
