Greenpeace Falmouth & East Bristol at Newlyn Fish Festival

Just back from a soggy the Newlyn Fish Festival on Bank Holiday Monday. East Bristol group combined with the local Falmouth group to run a stall to highlight our campaign for reform of the Common Fisheries Policy. Our own Mackerel and the Falmouth group's Cod plus the rest of the group dressed as fishmongers or fishermen meant we had a very visual presence. I spent quite a lot of time in the fish outfit and my cry of "Half man - half Cod - surely you're curious to know why?" got the punters in and the team did the rest signing up over 130 people to "Be A fisherman's friend” using the iPads as well as getting an impressive 333 fish cards signed.

We had some success with the photo booth which takes pictures to be uploaded to the facebook page http://www.facebook.com/beafishermansfriend.

As we were pretty much the quirkiest and most fun stall in the whole festival we attracted the interest of the photographer from 'The Cornishman' newspaper and also the roving reporter from BBC Radio Cornwall who interviewed Colin from the Falmouth group (with a small contribution from me) Carol has put the interview as a commentary to a slideshow here http://youtu.be/v-YoDZgycTg

There was more some publicity by dressing up the two girls from Radio Pirate FM who put the photos on their website http://www.piratefm.co.uk/gallery/-/newlyn-fish-festival-2012/

Carol took a load of photos which are here http://www.flickr.com/photos/48798428@N02/sets/72157631304768474/with/7887223216/

During the day we spoke to a number of fishermen working out of Newlyn and local harbours and generally support was good although some of them with larger boats (>10 metres) needed convincing that Greenpeace weren't against them but were simply against destructive fishing practices.

It was great working with our friends from the Falmouth Greenpeace group and Cris and Alica at head office were very pleased with all our hard work so it ended up as a very successful weekend despite the awful weather.
