Bristol Schools and Colleges - Flag for the Future Competition
This is a great opportunity for the young people of Bristol to be creative in designing a Flag for the Future that symbolises the three themes of Peace, Hope and Global Community. The Bristol East Greenpeace group are running the competition locally and then sending all the entries up to London to be entered in the international competition to choose a Flag for the Future. So there is a possibility of winning twice and the final chosen flag will be taken to the North Pole as part of the campaign to declare the Arctic as a world sanctuary!
Greenpeace International and the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) are hosting the global competition to design the flag to represent the youth of the world; a flag for peace, hope and global community. The competition is now open and entries to enter the Bristol based competition must be submitted by Wednesday 23rd January 2013. A local panel of judges will select winning entries from three categories and as many entries as possible will be exhibited during the weekend of Saturday 26th – Sunday 27th January at the Small Room of the Parlour Showrooms (opposite College Green). During this weekend Bristol East Greenpeace will be running a range of creative and informative activities and encourage people to support our Save the Arctic campaign. Currently over 2.25 million people have supported the call for the Arctic to be a sanctuary against commercial development.
The winning design will be made into a cloth flag and it will be lowered 4 kilometres beneath the ice and planted on the seabed in a time capsule containing the signatures of the millions of Arctic defenders. At the moment, no single country owns the high seas around the North Pole. But as the Arctic melts, countries and companies are eyeing it greedily. The Arctic matters to everybody everywhere, and what happens to the Arctic will affect us all. Young people today will probably live to see a time when the Arctic sea ice melts completely in the summer months. This is why we need a Flag for the Future – not a flag representing one nation or one group of people, but a flag that stands for universal hope, peace and global cooperation.
The competition is open to young people aged 6 to 26. For the Bristol competition it has been decided to split the local entrants into three categories for Primary schools, Secondary schools and Colleges/Universities. All flag designs need to be sent to: Flag for the Future, Richard Baxter, Flat 6, Greenway House, Redland Park, Bristol, BS6 6SD to arrive no later than Wednesday 23rd January 2013. Please make sure any hard copy submissions to the Bristol competition are clearly marked on the back with the entrants full name, age, country, school/college attended and email address or postal address. Entrants may also submit a 300 word explanation of your design if they wish. The template to be used by those entering can be found at the WAGGGS website - see link below. By submitting a design by post entrants will be confirming that they have read and agreed the terms and conditions which can also be found on the WAGGGS website.
Bristol East Greenpeace will ensure that all local entries will be sent up to London in time to meet the international competition’s deadline (11th February 2013) In London, short-listed designs will be evaluated by a judging panel including globally renowned fashion designer Vivienne Westwood. This panel will select the overall winner. The winning design will be produced as a flag to be planted at the North Pole.

Wouldn't it be wonderful if the winning design came from a young person living in the Bristol area?
