The ministry of transport (Tar Sands) action.

A couple of Bristol activists have just returned from the ministry of transport in London.

As you may have seen on the main Greenpeace site they managed to successfully shut the doors of the department of transport.

The UK government, led by transport minister Norman Baker, is currently blocking European plans under the Fuel Quality Directive to regulate one of the dirtiest and most dangerous forms of oil extraction - oil tar sands. Extracting oil from tar sands emits on average between three- and five-times more carbon dioxide than conventional oil drilling.

The UK is leading the charge to allow unrestricted access of this dirty fuel into Europe. Nearly all other European countries are supporting the plans to keep tar sands out of the EU.

So they pitched up outside the ministry managed to drive two cars into their doorways, lock cars and activists to the entrances, barricade the entrance. Activists hung banners and explained to the public and ministry workers exactly what tar sands are and why we cannot afford to use this incredibly dirty and polluting oil.

I hope they come to their senses quickly as every day we don’t deal with the catastrophic effects this method of oil extraction has on the environment irreversible damage is being done.
