Narwhal roams Picton Street

Picton Street was full of festive stalls on Saturday for the Xmas fayre.  Musicians played from the Picton Square stage and new Bristol mayor George Ferguson put in a cameo appearance as the pantomime goodie/baddie!

Against this lively background, Greenpeace East Bristol visited with our SaveTheArctic campaign.  We were hoping for some snow to make it truly festive and Arctic but had to be content with a brief spate of drizzle.

A snowy owl, a narwhal and a couple of polar bears roamed the fayre and provided something for the children to puzzle over.  The narwhal was accused of being a swordfish and the snowy owl was repeatedly mistaken for a seagull.  We really must have words with our costume department.  [Editors note:  The Greenpeace East Bristol costume department have issued a statement saying that owl adjustments are awaiting the hoot-ahead and that a moustachio’d walrus will be available for the Spring 2013 campaign season.]

220 residents from Montpelier and around signed up to our campaign so we are grateful to the fayre committee for having us and for the fayre attendees for being enthusiastic.

Thanks also to Greenpeacers Fi, Richard, Isaac, Madeline, Iain, Loz, Ian, Mark, Robin and Sue for getting the message across so well.

At last count, 2 ¼ million people have signed up to our international campaign for an Arctic Sanctuary at  www.savethearctic.org - the petition closes on February 11th.

This petition will be placed in a time capsule and lowered 4km below the Arctic ice at the north pole.  Young people under 26 are invited to design a flag to accompany the capsule – see link for further details:
