22 September, 2012 - 10:30 - 12:30

We are still going ahead with our Shell Day II peaceful protest despite Shell's recent announcement that they are ceasing operations in the Arctic for the rest of the year.  A combination of faulty safety equipment and encroaching sea ice has meant they are retreating, but with almost 2 million people supporting the campaign to protect the Arctic we are holding steadfast until the region is declared a sanctuary against commercial exploitation.  This one's for the planet!

Following the success of the 1st Shell Day in July where some 50 local Greenpeace groups in the UK undertook lawful protests outside local garages, we are looking to organise larger protests at a dozen or so locations nationally for Shell Day 2.  We had a great response from local supporters in July and over 35 people attended the first protest at a garage near the centre of Bristol.  We are looking to widen that support this time around to send a clear message to Shell that it must stop its insane plan to drill for oil in the pristine Arctic environment.  In fact we are campaigning for the Arctic to become a sanctuary - a no go area for oil, fish  and mineral companies.

Saturday 22nd September Location is to be Silvey's M32 Services (click for map).  We aim to meet between 10.00 - 10.15am at Portland Square and to start the protest at 10.30am.  It is proposed to finish the protest at 12.30pm.  So reserve the date in your diary and come and join us for an hour or two.  Mention it to your family, friends and neighbours and bring them along.  Bring placards and banners - bring cuddly toys of polar bears, arctic foxes, snowy owls .... walruses even! Why not wear fancy dress if you have it?  We have our own polar bear costume and can provide leaflets, stickers, and a limited supply of placards and posters.  It is proposed that we end the protest with a picnic in a local park (weather permitting) so pack some sarnies and a drink!
