Challenging Cairn Energy in the Arctic
Greenpeace ships, Esperanza and Arctic Sunrise are back in the Arctic monitoring the activities of British company, Cairn Energy. Last week Greenpeace revealed confidential correpondence between UK ministers that shows that the Government thinks an Arctic oil spill would be all but impossible to clean up. But Cairn Energy claims it has an oil spill response plan. Only thing is, Cairn won't let anyone see it. Over 11,000 people have emailed letters to Cairn's boss, Sir Bill Gammell, asking him to publish the plan. Support this campaign by clicking here and let Sir Gammell know of your concern.
Back on terra firma, Greenpeace blocked the entrance of Cairn's HQ in Edinburgh with the help of Paula the Polar Bear - see video.
Action in Brussels on 18th May
32 UK activists, (including 3 members from the Bristol area) participated in a direct action at the Business Europe summit in Brussels last month. The Greenpeace members barred entry to companies opposed to further reducing Europe's climate emissions and challenging the wider European business community to become climate leaders by supporting a 30 percent target. Activists locked themselves to the doors and refused to let climate laggards such as Microsoft, BP and Volkswagen, who hold back political and economic progress, into the conference. Well done team!
Videos of the action can be accessed from the follwing links.
