BRISTOL GREENPEACE

as part of the campagin to stop the expansion of nuclear power in the west we made a statement to the council.

17JANUARY2010

   BCC STATEMENT -NUCLEAR FREE BRISTOL from The Bristol GREENPEACE Groupp:

     The City of Bristol is currently designated a NUCLEAR FREE CITY by virtue of the extant

     resolution previously passed and not rescinded .Local citizens should be thankful for that,

     given the fact that they are book-ended by OLDBURY–ON-SEVERN 9 miles away ,and

     HINKLEY POINT 28 miles from Bristol. Both sites are now targetted by foreign companies

     for new nuclear build with unproven technology which has already been found to have safety

     design faults.

     NUCLEAR WASTE from Hinkley is still transported by rail through Bristol.

    THEREFORE Current Council policy is determined by The  Bristol City Council resolution made at the Council meeting held 10th JUNE 1986

    which resolved that:

     “In view of the consequences of the accident at Chernobyl this Council believes that the

      generation of energy through nuclear power poses unacceptable risks to the people of

      Bristol. In order to protect the safety and the environment of present and future generations

      of Bristolians, Council agrees to demand that the Government

      a)    halts all expansion of nuclear power installations;

      b)    starts to decommission all nuclear power stations;

      c)    begins investment in alternative employment  to the nuclear power industry, in the coal industry and alternative energy sources, and in a

       programme of energy conservation and further agrees that the views of the City Council expressed in their motion be conveyed to Her Majesty’s

       Government for their observations.

     Recognising that the decommissioning of present nuclear power installations will take up to 20 years to complete, Council instructs the Policy &

     Resources Committee to prepare a report on the consequences for Bristol’s population if an accident at Hinkley Point, Berkeley or Oldbury Power

     stations similar to the experience of Chernobyl in the Soviet Union.

     The Committee should invite the views of County Councils of Avon, Somerset & Gloucestershire and the District Councils within these counties

     and should further liase  with known professional bodies associated with the nuclear power industry and with professional bodies and with

     organisations  who are associated with nuclear power” [ENDS]
