Hot on the heels of the popular Barbie Hunt it seems that Barbie's tragic secret is now out on the high street. Stickers have been seen on her packaging in Bristol toy stores declaring that the cardboard may contain destroyed rainforest. As a result Barbie's manufacturer, Mattel, has been plagued by phone calls from members of the public who are horrified at the thought of packaging from unsustainable sources.
Meanwhile Bristol Greenpeace have been promoting the campaign at last weekend's Festival of Nature. 120 letters addressed to Mattel were signed by concerned members of the public who wanted to support our campaign. The letter asks Mattel to reconsider it's commercial arrangement for packaging from APP (Asia Pulp and Paper) who are responsible for cutting down protected Indonesian rainforest.
And it seems Mattel has been forced to act following all this unwanted publicty. The firm has announced that it will stop sourcing from Asia Pulp and Paper - and will start developing a deforestation policy. The start of something good we hope!
Of course, Mattel are not the only toy manufacturer that is trading with APP. So who will Greenpeace turn their attention to next in its campaign to save the rainforest?
