Harvesting Success - Volkwagen and Tar Sands Campaign Updates

Throughout the summer we have toiled on the streets, prepared the ground, sown the seeds in the minds of others and it looks like our work is about to bear fruit.

The campaign against Volkswagen has been no bed of roses!  However, VW has seen the light and has indicated a move away from the Dark Side.  The firm has stated in the Financial Times that it can meet the European Union’s carbon dioxide target of 120 grams per kilometre by 2012 – and even the tougher 95g/km target expected in 2020.  The same targets that Volkswagen have been lobbying against.  They have the technology - let's hope they have the willpower.  Ask VW to confirm it's true by sending them an email.  Click here.

More 'blooming' marvellous news!  The EU has also recognised that importing oil from Tar Sands in Alberta Canada would scupper the proposed Quality Fuel Directive which aims to reduce the emissions from the production of transport fuel used in Europe by 6% by 2020.  An EU ban on oil from Tar Sands is being proposed for approval amongst member states.  Paul Morozzo from Greenpeace UK said: "This proposal is absolutely the right recommendation."  It is hoped that Europe's stance could set a precedent amongst other markets which will see them one by one turn against Tar Sands expansion.  Click here for a fuller story.

We have ploughed the streets and scattered the good seed on the ground.  We are poised to reap significant rewards, but also know there is much more work to be done to ensure a greener environment.
