Underwater scene form Gulf of Mexico

A 'Deepwater Horizon' type accident could have easily happened in the North Sea just four months before the Gulf of Mexico oil spill.  The near miss occurred on the Sedco 711 platform, owned by Shell but operated by Transocean - the same company that operated the Deepwater Horizon. Luckily the blow out preventer actually worked this time and a disaster was averted. This worrying event helps our demand for a cessation of deepwater drilling in UK waters as stated on the 'Go Beyond Oil' postcards that we have been getting the public to sign.  It is one of the key demands that is being raised with MPs before they debate the Energy Security and Green Economy Bill.  Let's hope they realise this near-miss is the consequence in the search for risky oil.

The incident was reported on Radio 4's Today programme.  Click here to listen to the news item
