We set up our VW communication stall on a crisp, bright and sunny Saturday morning outside the Clifton Down Shopping Centre. Our mission was to inform the public about Volkswagen's opposition to EU laws that would require the car manufacturing industry to adopt a 30% reduction in CO2 emissions by 2020. By signing our campaign cards we aim to persuade VW to turn away from the Dark Side and face their corporate responsibilities towards the environment.
Campaigning was a bit slow to begin with early morning shoppers, but then at 10.30am the gleaming white 'star' of the campaign emerged from the shopping centre entrance. Our stunning Stormtrooper certainly got people's attention! He had an universal appeal amongst small children as well as the 'big kid' in all of us. Naturally, many children were excited but you could tell their dads were also holding back a glimmer of awe - giving us a chance to communicate the reason why we were there. Our Stormtrooper also appealed to many university students - one group even wanted to take him to out to a late midday breakfast! We also got horn toots and cheers from passing car drivers.
Our team including Alice, Anthony, Marina, Richard, Sue, Wilf and Zaharah encouraged 167 campaign cards to be signed. Well done - an excellent result. Big thank you to Anthony and Zaharah for joining us from across the bridge. Wearing the Stormtrooper suit for a 3 hour stint seemed to be enjoyable - but not the most comfortable!
