I was just logging in some future Greenpeace dates on my calendar and it dawned on me just how busy the summer has been for the Bristol branch. For those of you that have turned up to events, actions and meetings here's a reminder of what we have achieved. A hearty 'Well done' to you all - couldn't have done it all without you!
Say No to Tar Sands
This has been the main focus of our activities over the Summer and has seen the group out on the streets and at community events, engaging the public to inform them of this environmental disaster in Alberta, Canada.
The focus has been on persuading BP not to invest further in this destructive project. Members of the group have been getting informed about the wider issues with viewings of films such as Dirty Oil, H2Oil and Petropolis. We organised a peaceful protest outside the only BP garage in the Bristol area (see main picture above). All in all we got over 1,400 campaign cards signed by the public - a fantastic achievement!
In addition, more signatures were handed over to BP by three of our members who attended a vigil ouside their headquarters in London.
More recently, two members were involved in the action that closed down over 40 BP garages in London.
Trident - The £97bn Question?
As part of the national campaign the Bristol branch has been asking the public if we should spend billions of pounds replacing the Trident nuclear missle system. The overall response is a resounding 'No!'
Out and About - Community Events
The Bristol Greenpeace stall has appeared at numerous Bristol events over the Summer including:
- Bristol Festival of Nature
- Bristol Harbourside Festival
- St Werburgh's City Farm Summer Fair
- Thornbury Eco Fair
- Goldney Garden Party
- Berkley Festival
Glastonbury 2010
Greenpeace has a major presence at Glastonbury Festival as it is one of the worthy causes along with Oxfam and water Aid. Four members of the group attended and worked as volunteers at the Greenfields site. With music while you work it beats a hard day at the office!
And while we were hard at it .....
The Summer brought good news of campaign successes on a number of fronts. Following the triumph in getting Nestle to stop getting their palm oil ingredient from rainforest destroyers, Sinar Mas, HSBC also decided to sell it's shares in the company. After 10 years of campaigning the EU voted to ban illegal timber from being imported inot the Euro zone. And a big sigh of relief as the new coalition government cancelled plans for a 3rd runway for Heathrow. Click here to read more about these Greenpeace successes.
Join in the Action!
For those that have missed what's been going on, then no problem - there's plenty of activities lined up for the rest of the year. Why not come along and join in the action?
