Our sympathy and support go to all those in Japan who are suffering at this time.
It is a changing time and a changing tide in the world. The raising of the Japanese nuclear risk to a Seven – on a par with Chernobyl – has also raised the spectre of the dangers of nuclear power generation, however the industry behind it may want to portray it as low-carbon and renewable.
The only part of renewable are the irradiated ‘spent’ fuel rods which can be exported to other countries as fuel for them to use, or for the proliferation of the latest in nuclear weapons – Depleted Uranium – which has been used in Iraq, and Afghanistan which seems to have ‘slipped’ through Treaty’s of Non-Proliferation, internationally signed.
The first rationale for Nuclear ‘power’ plants came after the first plant to produce irradiated Uranium for the first nuclear bombs was up and running. All waste from Nuclear power generation can be used for weapons. This is why the restrictions for use for weapons have been in place - however – little notice has been given to the weapons-grade Uranium which can be refined from waste from Nuclear ‘energy’ plants.
Why else would Governments support them? And the industry try to get itself relabelled as ‘low-carbon’ and re-newable, and thus eligible for Government grants – of taxpayers money for development.
Greenpeace has always had a fundamental, based on the cautionary principle, stance against the Nuclear industry. I hope that you will take part in the many websites which encourage an anti-nuclear stance and are running active anti-nuclear campaigns and catch up with all things nuclear from Greenpeace.org.uk or visit these sites:
