The Greenpeace flagship - Rainbow Warrior - was in London this weekend, and Camden Greenpeace were on board!
Besides having a good nose around the good ship, we welcomed hundreds of visitors along with other active supporters from across the country. We helped visitors make their BigIf pledges to Ed Miliband, to tell him we don't want new coal fired power stations, and helped raise all important funds for Greenpeace selling lovely merchandise. The new Amchitka CD was playing all day, and I've been humming Joni Mitchell and James Taylor non stop ever since (it's really good by the way, and would make a lovely Christmas present! ;)
The fantastic crew gave us a really nice welcome, and made us feel right at home on board. We had some delicious hot soup in the mess, and had a good chat with crewmembers and Greenpeace activists from all over the world.
It was all so exciting I couldn't resist going back last night to do the nightwatch so that the crew could get some well earned rest. It was a strange feeling sitting in the bridge in the middle of the night, the only person on board awake. I was imagining all the exciting and inspiring actions that the Warrior has seen over the years, and felt enormously privileged to be part of it, if only for a short time. The watch duties kept me busy throughout the night, with the hourly inspections of all the cabins and bilges. And keeping an eye on deck for any unexpected visitors. After waking the crew, we released the mooring lines and watched her pull away. Waving them off on their next adventure, it was a little bit sad to see the ship disappear through London's docklands. Hopefully, it won't be the last time we see her in town.
