Notes from our Monthly Meeting - 9th March 2010
As always, there was a good mix of faces, new and old. We changed venues to the upstairs room at the Crown and Goose pub as our usual hangout, Inspiral Lounge, can't use their basement rooms anymore.
Summary of last months activities
Cinema night – Food Inc
Airplot campaigning at Hampstead Heath Rail station, good results 60 new signatures
Trident subvertising campaigning
Stall at the UCL Fashion Show as part of their Green Week
Evening with Vince Cable: Neil met up with local Lib Dems, asking questions on climate change
Co-Ordinators Forum, groups from all the UK represented
Last month was filled with a lot of splendid events. There was some socialising with a movie night, Neil went out and represented us on the political frontier, we took to the streets at Hampstead Heath, attracted the attention of the students at the UCL at their fashion week and did some active campaigning against spending £97bn on replacing Trident! All in all an amazing month!
Also Jamie went out and made a movie on the Oilympics, organised by the Tar Sands Network, which you can see here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mxWxKNFErB0
Ask the Climate Question
Greenpeace is part of the Ask the Climate Question coalition together with among others Oxfam, WWF and RSBP. We want to make sure that climate change gets the attention it deserves during the election! As part of this we will be joining Transition Belsize for the Resilience Hustings on 14 April. The parliamentary hopefuls for three major parties, Labour, Tory and Lib Dem, will all be there. We want to make sure that climate change is a priority for them, both in the election campaign and when they get in to parliament. We'll be doing voxpops (video interviews) with people on the streets in the weeks before the hustings, to help them get the answers to their questions on climate change and find out how they think it will affect them.
We had a brainstorm for ideas about how we can engage people in fun and exciting ways, so get ready for lots of campaigning on this in the coming weeks. The next campaigning day will be Saturday 27th March, so please let Neil know now if you can make it: wenjones@me.com or 07549 924765
Trident
Our Trident campaign has started! The government want to spend £97bn on new nuclear weapons, and we can think of much better ways to spend that money, and I'm sure you can too! We have been out and about working on public awareness activities for the campaign, you can find out more about it here: http://www.vimeo.com/10058626
Upcoming campaigns
The coming year will be packed with interesting campaigns, including:
Trident
Ask the Climate Question
Tar Sands
Palm Oil (new campaign has just launched - more info here: http://www.greenpeace.org.uk/
Glastonbury
Greenpeace is looking for volunteers to get the best of both worlds, spending the day working at the many Greenpeace stalls and at night going crazy at the concerts. This year Glastonbury is celebrating its 40th anniversary, and as always, Greenpeace will play an enormous part in festival.
Volunteers are needed in a number of roles, such as:
Campaigning
Food prep
Ecocafe
Clean up
Ecoshowers
Green traders
Skate ramp
Climbing wall
You would be needed to be there from Tuesday the 23rd June, helping setting everything up, till Monday the 28th giving a hand cleaning up.
The deadline for applications is 31st March, so contact Neil or Laura ASAP for more details and an application form. We are only able to nominate volunteers who have been active members of the Camden network, and who we know to be reliable.
Other festivals where Greenpeace also needs volunteers:
Lattitude
Waveney
Camden green fair
As always remember to keep an eye out for local festival/events where we could set up a stall and make a good difference.
Political Lobbying network
Greenpeace is looking to create a Political Lobbying network to put more focus on making our opinions heard by the government and making people on the street know they have the power to influence their local politicians. There will be a training session at the HQ at a later point. Get in touch if this is something you are interested in.
Give the Orang-utan a break
On a final note, our new campaign focuses on stopping Nestle from destroying rain forests (the home of not only the Orang-utan but thousands of other extinction threatened species).
So go the website, watch the video (powerful stuff) and write an email to Nestles CEO Paul Bulcke to demand they stop using palm oil from trashed rainforests.
