A good meeting with a lot of new faces and a special guest, Maya De Souza, Green Councillor from Camden Council. Having enjoyed a great summer with festivals and vacations, London is again waking up and getting active, and so arewe!
Summary of last months activities
You have probably all read the post on our brilliant stall at the Themes festival with theamazing Banksy Jungle Book Canvas. While the weather didn't allow us to have our usual summer social there were though other good (and not quite so good) events:
Gobeyondoil campaign and stickering
During the last month we have informed the public about the obvious dangers of our oil dependent society (http://www.gobeyondoil.org/). If you have seen stickers of oil soaked rainbows appearingeverywhere around London, then yes that was us.
The Tokyo Two Candle Vigil
The two Japanese Greenpeace anti-whaling activists ToruSuzuki and Junichi Sato (the "Tokyo Two") who have been facing trial for nearly two years in Japan, have received a suspended sentence – wholly disproportionate result given they acted in the public interest to save whales. While we where ready to hold a candle vigil in front of the Japanese embassy, should they have been found guilty, we decided that a global internet protest would be the next step(http://www.greenpeace.org/international/en/campaigns/oceans/whaling/ending-japanese-whaling/whale-meat-scandal/tokyo-two-march-for-justice/).
Upcoming events and opportunities
Political lobbying training and network 9/10 October
One of the best methods of getting our point of views to the top of the system is to actually use their own channels. We want to be in close personal contact with the local mp's and councillors, to make sure they are constantly aware of our viewpoints on the current subjects, allowing them to come to us as well for advice and a fresh perspective. To build up this contact we need people who will 3 or 4 times a year drop by their office and have a chat with the politicians personally, as well as send them an email response when they send out press releases or attend public events etc. If interested in getting the training and joining the network please get in touch.
Collaboration with Maya De Souza
Whilevisiting our meeting Maya proposed to collaborate on Green issues and invited anyone interested to join her in pushing the Green agenda. Three of our members, Larissa, Alex and Christian have already signed up. This is a great opportunity not only for Greenpeace to work through the official channels, but also for anyone who are interested in politics as an individual. To learn more, email Maya on (mayadesouza@hotmail.com)
10-10-10 on the 10thof October
The Camden group will celebrate its 10 year anniversary this year! Coming up is also an event with the 10-10 Campaign (http://www.1010global.org/uk) on the10th of October. Seeing as our usual summer social has been postponed till now, it seemed obvious to combine all three events.
If you have an idea to something the group could do to celebrate this day of 10s please get in contact. While it isn't strictly necessary for it to be 10-themed,we'd like to try and see how many 10s we could get. One of the proposed ideas was fx:
-
A 10 stop pub crawl through Camden, where we would get 10 signatures pr pub.
Have a great time till next meeting!
