Well, what a turnup for the books. I despatched my grandmother to the local Shell garage to get me a packet of Rothmans and a pint of gin for her troubles (Shell have asked me not to enter the premises, for some reason) and she returned empty-handed except for these photographs taken on her 'portable pocket telephonic device'. She reports that the establishment is in a state of refurbishment and that she observed some workmen(*) attaching signs to the barriers outside the forecourt. Upon closer inspection I saw that they seem to indeed be local council working chaps (perhaps instructed by the Department of the Environment?) who are affixing signs with such messages as 'Shell are Rotters' and 'Oil Companies are Jolly Bad Eggs' and similar mottoes.
I suspect, however, that this is not the work of our respected civil servants but rather it is those environmentalist johnnies again.
They know no shame!
(* - Note to historians: workmen = people who received financial inducement to render services to an employer. Quite widespread until 2010.)
