Friday saw Cornwall’s fabulous 40 Year Anniversary Film Night take place at the WI building in Falmouth. We decked the hall with banners, posters and other paraphernalia, and had a kitchen full of drinks and home-made cakes at the ready.
After dressing a couple of willing victims in our Storm Trooper and Darth Vader costumes, we took to the streets to rouse some last-minute interest before the films began. There was a brief scare when the Trooper went AWOL roaming the town, but she returned just in time with interested viewers in tow!
By the time Colin was ready to hop up onstage and give the introductions, almost every seat had been filled. The audience were brilliant and seemed to be just as engaged as we were. From chuckles at some of the spoof VW ads, to gasps at the shocking and poignant imagery of the documentary, the films hit a nerve with everyone watching.
With cake and wine or a hot beverage in hand, after-show discussions covered everything from Greenpeace’s savvy use of social and international media (and everything in between) to the inspiring and heartbreaking moments of the organisation’s founding and history. This was also a brilliant opportunity to network, with many people eager to discuss current and upcoming campaigns. With contact details and stories exchanged, hopefully we will be seeing some new faces at upcoming meetings!
Overall the night was a great success. Everybody left on a high; whether it was just getting to know that little bit more about Greenpeace, or looking forward to getting involved with future campaigns! Special thanks to Pete our tech wiz, and Spencer our Dark Lord.
