Last weekend, Cornwall Greenpeace were right in the heart of the fantastic Sea Shanty festival in Falmouth.
The lovely Cris and Alicia travelled down from London to present us with fabulous new materials and props! After a bit of struggling and a lot of giggles, we managed to construct the shiny new photobooth, complete with a basket of fishmonger trilbies, a sowester and a cheeky shell bikini top. The group were especially excited about the temporary tattoos, and had everyone branded with the message-bearing anchor in no time at all!
It didn’t take long for the crowds to start pouring in. Once again we were overwhelmed by the interest and support that people had for this campaign, with fishermen and friends alike coming forward to sign our cards.
The tattoos were extremely popular, especially with the children, whose parents chatted to us about sustainability while the little ones got inked. We managed to get a couple of families, whole clans strolling away happily comparing arms and wrists!
The photobooth was a delight for people young and old, visited by an adorable 10 month old girl, a brilliant lady in her eighties, and a crowd of people in between!
Clarence the Cornish Cod made several appearances once again, attracting people to the stall and sending them our way when he was out and about. His usage inside the marquee had to be limited however, as his sweeping tail could have caused several accidents in such a tight space! Luckily he was very well behaved and kept his fins under control.
After a tiring day with 312 fish cards signed for MEP Julie Girling, we went out for a bit of evening networking with a trip to the award-winning sustainable chippie Harbour Lights. Later on we met up with some of Port Issac’s jovial shantiers the Fisherman’s Friends, and chatted to local fishermen and other singers over some local cider.
On Sunday we were just as excited to get people involved, so Clarence was donned and sent out once more. We had a visit from Fisherman’s Friends members Jon and Jon, who helped with some tattooing and paid a visit to the photobooth. Later in the day when they were performing, they talked about their involvement with the campaign, and Colin took Clarence for a little wander about the stage!
It was another great day for signatures, with 478 cards signed for MEP Ashley Fox. All in all a great weekend, with 43 visits to the photobooth and buckets of cards to send!
Thanks to Colin, Helen, Leila, Lisa, Vicki and Becky, the wonderful Alicia and Cris, and of course all the amazing shantiers, fishermen and fisherman’s friends who were involved with the weekend.
Keep your eyes peeled for the next event we’re attending, the Rock Oyster festival in Wadebridge!
