Greeted by sunshine and a double rainbow at Heathfields Ecology Centre we enjoyed soup and made final preparations to the spot in the Orchard reserved for the `Blenheim Orange` Cox Apple Tree. Undeterred by the turn to rain, about 15 people arrived from various spots in and around Croydon to witness the planting of the fine tree by 2 of the Croydon MPs, Malcolm Wicks (Labour, Croydon North) and Andrew Pelling (Independent, Croydon Central). On the way to the planting it was pointed out that the 3rd MP (Richard Ottaway, Conservative) has recently written a letter to a Croydon Greenpeace member stating that he would also like to plant a tree in opposition to the 3rd Runway, though was not able to make the location this one was being planted at.
A short speech was heard explaining that the significance of the tree was that it is planted in opposition to the 3rd Runway and twinned with a tree planting on the Greenpeace Airplot, representing our combined hope that aviation will stop expanding at this and other sites. Comments were made by the MPs, Mr. Pelling proudly announcing that he had long been signed up to the Greenpeace campaign and Mr. Wicks detailing his support for Greenpeace activities. Many thank`s to all who attended.
Watch this space for details of further planting(s) in opposition to expansion at Heathrow and elsewhere!!!
