Marching against the proposed South London Waste Incinerator

Posted by Richard Griffiths - 13 May 2012 at 4:30pm - Comments

On Sunday the 3th of May at least 100 vocal and commited protestors set off from Mayday Hospital in Croydon to protest about the possibility of an incinerator being constructed in Beddington near Croydon.

Who were they? They were local residents and members of The Labour Party, The Green Party, Lib-Dems and people who resented the facts that they were'nt being listened to by those in charge of driving through this horrendous device that will burn instead of recycling plastic and other reuseable waste. There were members of Greenpeace, Friends of the Earth and Transition Town Sutton-to name but a few and they were headed towards Croydon Town Hall where speeches were made to reassure marchers that we will keep on until the authority listens to what we have to say and to put people before the profit of the contractor who would be locked into a twenty year plus contract, were this to go ahead in its present form.

For this is the crux of the problem. Not only do people not want the pollutants and toxins that come with incineration, they think of the waste as a resource to save on imports to save costs and of course to stop landfill. The South London Waste Authority wants that too but only because it will have penalties imposed upon it, not because it wants at all costs to keep the air clean and free from pollutants.

We'll keep on protesting until we get clean air and a higher rate of recycled materials. Thank you, all those who attended the march today.
