Visit to the site of the proposed Sizewell C Nuclear Station on Sat. the 21st of April

Posted by Richard Griffiths - 24 April 2012 at 8:38pm - Comments

I joined about one hundred other activists at the Site of Sizewell A Station around midday where speakers were updating people on the current situation on the two new proposed nuclear reactors at Hinkley (see the video please) and Sizewell.

We were given an informed talk and tour of the three sites stretched out along the beach at Sizewel. We learnt that Sizewell A has been closed but is still being used to ship nuclear spent fuel to Sellafield. Sizewell B is currently operating ie making electricity for the grid but all sites are subject to flooding by the sea should a spring tide of the proportions of the infamous 1953 flood surround the site as it did before. This situation would apparently leave nuclear waste stored at the site under water as it is only stored on a 30 metre high shingle bank at present. The possiblity of dredging in the channel could cause the loss of the present shingle bank and put the nuclear site in danger according to our guide. A disturbing prospect indeed.

Speakers included:

Pete Wilkinson: A founder member of Greenpeace - plans for emergency evacuation and radiation 'spikes' from outages at Sizewell.

Charles Barnett: Chairman of the ‘Shut Down Sizewell’ Campaign
