A lovely sunny afternoon, 50 people, photographers from all 3 local papers and sticky Dorset apple cake!
Poundbury Garden centre donated a perfect Cox's Orange Pippin. The Mayor came to plant the tree and talked about the 10:10 pledge taken by Dorchester Town Council.
The Town Crier of Dorchester gave us a cry:
'Oyez! Oyez! Oyez!
The Cox's Orange Pippin we're placing here today,
Is planted to remind us we must find another way,
This fine old English apple was developed near Heathrow
It's place of origin we'll lose, to the third runway say"Whoa!".
Do we really need this growth when so much is at stake?
A reappraisal's overdue, let's think and contemplate.
We know our planet's under threat from much of what we do;
Now's the time to change our ways - to the future let's be true.
Many people came before and many, for sure, will follow;
For our children's children we'll change now - no more of the promise hollow.
God Save the Queen'
Sue Farrant (Lib Dem PPC for West Dorset) and Joy Wallis(Dorset Wildlife Trust) spoke about keeping environmental issues on the agenda.
We charged our glasses with apple juice or cider and toasted the tree.
'A toast to our tree that will remind of us the contribution we have to make.
A toast to its partner tree at Heathrow that reminds us of the change in political priorities that we need to push for.'
We have already had 3 great articles (interesting to see their different takes, having been provided with the same information and selection of photos) published before the event and have been promised 3 about the event:

Tree planting article - 'Western Gazette'
Tree planting article - 'Dorset Echo'
