After several days out campaigning in Weymouth and Dorchester, including a rather eventful morning at the local BP garage, Irene and I headed to London on Tuesday 27th July to take the campaign to the next level! We met up with Tim Copely from Greenpeace and other groups from North Wales, Tyne and Wear, Salisbury and a couple of groups from London. It was a pretty exciting atmosphere as just that morning Greenpeace had succeeded in locking down 46 BP petrol stations in central London, so we suspected BP may not be best impressed with us. We arrived at BP Headquarters just after 4pm, unfurled posters and had leaflets ready to go. We were fairly well received by the security staff, and even one fairly chirpy PC who took one of our leaflets to read on his way home! There were also a number of news crews still around from that morning. In general it was pretty event free, but certainly did manage to get the attention of a few passers-by! Unfortunately, the end of the afternoon was a bit of an anti-climax as no one from the press office was prepared to come down and receive our posters and regional gifts. In the end, the head of the security staff agreed to take them in and pass them on, bit of a flat end to a busy campaign! To be fair though, after the day BP had (fuel stations closed down, last quarter loss, etc) it was not a surprise!
